Typica

Typica is one of the two varieties nearly all cultivated Arabica traces back to — the other being Bourbon. It is a tall tree, it gets sick easily, and it produces very little coffee. It is also the plant that colonial shipping carried out of Yemen and spread across four continents, which is why most coffee grown outside Ethiopia is either Typica, a Typica descendant, or a cross with one.

Its reputation rests on a simple trade-off. World Coffee Research — the specialty industry’s reference catalogue for coffee varieties — rates Typica’s yield low and its quality at high altitude “Very Good” (World Coffee Research, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch). Farmers who keep it are choosing the cup over the harvest.

What the plant is like

Everything in this list is from the World Coffee Research variety record for Typica (accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch).

  • Stature: tall.
  • Leaf tips: bronze — the new growth at the end of a branch comes in coppery rather than green, which is how pickers and agronomists spot it in a mixed field.
  • Bean size: large.
  • Yield potential: low.
  • Quality potential: “Very Good” at high altitude.
  • Optimal altitude: high — above 1,600 m near the equator (5°N–5°S), above 1,300 m at 5–15°, above 1,000 m beyond 15°. The threshold drops as you move away from the equator because the climate cools with latitude as well as with height.
  • Coffee leaf rust: low resistance / susceptible. Rust is the fungus Hemileia vastatrix, the biggest single threat to Arabica farms.
  • Nematodes: susceptible. (Microscopic soil worms that attack the roots.)
  • Coffee berry disease: susceptible.
  • Planting density: 3,000–4,000 plants per hectare with single-stem pruning.
  • Nutrition requirement: medium.
  • First production: year 4.

Two of those numbers explain why Typica lost most of its acreage. It is susceptible to all three of the major diseases at once, and at 3,000–4,000 trees per hectare it plants roughly half as densely as dwarf varieties like Caturra, which pack 5,000–6,000 into the same ground. A fragile plant you can’t crowd is a hard business case.

Typica is commonly said to yield 20–30% less cherry than Bourbon — a figure reported independently by Perfect Daily Grind (accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch) and, from the other direction, by Wikipedia’s Bourbon entry (see Bourbon). Since World Coffee Research already calls Bourbon’s own production “relatively low,” that leaves Typica near the bottom of the productivity table.

Where it came from

Genetically, World Coffee Research places Typica in the Bourbon-Typica group, on the Typica side. Its own history-of-Arabica page adds the key finding: recent genetic tests confirmed that the seeds originally taken from Ethiopia to Yemen were related to the Bourbon and Typica varieties (World Coffee Research — History of Arabica, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch). Arabica is native to Ethiopia, where the species’ genetic diversity is concentrated; Yemen is where it first became a crop.

The route out of Yemen is one of the best-documented plant migrations in agriculture. All dates below are as given by World Coffee Research (both pages above, confirmed via WebFetch):

Typica went on to dominate South and Central American plantations until the 1940s, when low yields and disease pushed farms toward its descendants and toward the dwarf Bourbon mutations. World Coffee Research reports it is still cultivated in Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica — where it is grown as Jamaica Blue Mountain.

Note how much of that itinerary runs through a botanical garden rather than a farm. A large share of the world’s Arabica descends from a very small number of plants moved between European greenhouses, which is the root of Arabica’s famously narrow genetic base outside Ethiopia.

What it’s called elsewhere

World Coffee Research lists Typica as also being called Criollo (Creole), Indio (Indian), Arábigo (Arabica), Plume Hidalgo, Blue Mountain, and Sumatra (confirmed via WebFetch; Perfect Daily Grind repeats the same list). These are trade and regional names for the same plant, not separate varieties — a bag labelled Criollo in Mexico and one labelled Blue Mountain in Jamaica are the same lineage.

To verify

Several variety guides add Kona — the Hawaiian coffee — to that synonym list. World Coffee Research does not include Kona among Typica’s names, and its catalogue returns no entry for Kona at all (checked 2026-07-23, HTTP 404). The Hawaiian planting is widely described in the trade as Typica-derived, but that link rests on secondary sources here, not on the variety catalogue.

The family tree

Typica’s real importance is as a parent. Relationships confirmed against World Coffee Research variety records:

Maragogipe is the clearest illustration of what Typica does: it kept its parent’s low yield — World Coffee Research calls it “very low yielding” — while producing beans so large they became a novelty in their own right, and breeders eventually crossed it into Pacamara to get the bean size without quite so much of the fragility.

SL34 is the odd one out. It was selected from what Kenyan records call a “French Mission” (Bourbon) population, but genetic testing put it on the Typica side, and World Coffee Research says the original story “could be incorrect.” Its stablemate SL28 does still test as Bourbon-related.

To verify

Perfect Daily Grind’s Typica guide lists Caturra among Typica’s descendants. This contradicts World Coffee Research and this wiki’s own Caturra note, both of which describe Caturra as a natural single-gene mutation of a Bourbon population. Treat Caturra as Bourbon-derived; the Typica attribution appears to be an error in the secondary source.

What it tastes like

The authoritative verdict is short: “Very Good” cup quality at high altitude, per World Coffee Research. Perfect Daily Grind quotes an assessment of “elegance, flowers and fruits, and complex flavours,” with “very high cup quality when well managed” (confirmed via WebFetch).

Beyond that, descriptions come from roasters and variety blogs rather than any controlled sensory study, and they converge on the same shape — clean, sweet, medium-bodied, complex rather than loud.

To verify

Roaster write-ups attach specific descriptors to Typica — chocolate, nuts, mild dried fruit, black cherry and plum, with acidity shifting from bright citrus at high elevation to softer malic acidity lower down. These come from individual roaster blogs, not from a published sensory study or a cupping dataset, and no primary source was found for them. Read them as the trade’s shared impression of the variety, not a measurement.

There are no published cupping scores, auction prices, or named buyers specific to Typica in any of the primary sources checked — not World Coffee Research, and not the auction bodies. What the sources do say is directional: the quality justifies a premium, and Jamaica Blue Mountain is the standard example of a Typica planting whose price makes the disease risk worth carrying (Perfect Daily Grind, confirmed via WebFetch). Anyone quoting a specific Typica score range is synthesising, not citing.

To verify

Two claims repeated in popular guides could not be confirmed against a primary source. First, that Typica is “one of the purest Arabica varieties” because it retains the original Ethiopian genetic material — the underlying fact that Arabica is a natural hybrid of Coffea eugenioides and Coffea canephora is well established, but the “purest variety” framing is blog language, not a genetic finding. Second, that Typica material underlies the Moka Cau Dat tradition in Vietnam — this appears in a single search-optimised source with no corroboration.
