Best of Panama results archive

The Best of Panama results archive is the running, year-by-year record of who won the Best of Panama (BoP) green-coffee competition, what each winning lot scored on the cupping table, and what it sold for at the online auction that follows. Because BoP is the event that set — and keeps resetting — the world record price for coffee, its historical results are the closest thing the specialty-coffee world has to a price ledger for the very top of the market.

There is no single tidy public archive of these results. The official competition site and the separate auction site each foreground the current edition and do not, as of mid-2026, publish an easy year-by-year back-catalogue of past winners and prices.¹² Historical figures therefore have to be pieced together from news coverage, producer announcements, and reference summaries — which is exactly why the numbers below are cross-checked and flagged where they rest on a single source.

There is one important exception, and it explains a lot about why the early years stay murky. SCAP, which runs the competition, does keep an official page of auction results going back to 2001 — but almost every year’s table is published as a scanned picture of the results sheet, not as text. Checked directly at the source: 2001 through 2016 are all image links only (the 2007–2011 entries are files named results2007.jpeg through results2011.jpeg), and 2017 is the single year on that page published as a readable text table, complete with lot codes, weights, prices per pound and high-bidder names.³ The data for the other years exists and is official, but a search engine can’t read it, no automated tool can quote it, and it can only be transcribed by a person opening each image by eye. Everything below marked “unknown” is unknown in text — much of it is probably sitting in those pictures.

That lopsidedness has a nasty side effect, and it is the single biggest trap in researching this period: because 2017 is the only year a machine can read on that page, automated research tools keep pulling 2017 rows and reporting them as 2007–2011 results. See the lot-code warning under 2008–2010 below before trusting any figure attributed to these years.

Prices are per pound and reflect very small lots — often tens of kilograms — so a headline price is what one determined buyer paid for one bag, not a market rate.

A reminder that the table above tracks prices, not titles: a farm can win a category in a given year without ever appearing in a record-price story. Finca Sophia won the washed Geisha category in 2017 and 2020 and has placed in most years since.¹⁰ Its 2017 win now has a price and a buyer attached — $254.80/lb to Saza Coffee and Aroma Coffee, off SCAP’s official sheet³ — but no cupping score for it, and neither price nor score for any of its other placings, surfaced in the sources consulted. Note also that SCAP’s sheets record prices and bidders but not scores, so even a full transcription of the image years would not produce cupping scores.

2006 in detail

2006 is the first year in this ledger where the winner stands on firmer ground than the price. Hacienda La Esmeralda’s own awards list — the producer’s primary record of what it has won — shows the farm taking the Geisha Washed category in 2006, as part of an unbroken run of washed-Geisha wins from 2004 through 2007, followed by further wins in 2009 and 2010.⁴ That much is confirmed at the source.

The number everyone quotes for 2006 — US$50.25 per pound — is not. It appears in a single secondary reference summary and in no official auction sheet, producer page or contemporary trade report consulted here.⁶ No cupping score and no buyer for the 2006 lot surfaced in any source: the official competition site publishes only the current edition and carries no back-catalogue reaching the 2000s,¹ and the farm’s own site names the years it won without attaching prices, scores or buyers to them.⁴

To verify — the 2006 price, score and buyer

**50.25/lb for the 2006 Esmeralda Geisha** rests on one secondary source and is not corroborated by any primary record found here.[^9] The **cupping score** and the **buyer** of that lot are simply unknown — no source consulted names either, so any figure circulating for them should be treated as unsourced. Separately, [[World Coffee Research]] — the source cited elsewhere in this wiki for the 2004 debut — actually dates the Geisha breakthrough to **2005** at "over 20/pound”, not 2004 at $21/lb.¹¹ The 2004 date is far more widely repeated, but the disagreement is real and unresolved, so treat the whole 2004–2006 price ladder as reported history until an official BoP auction sheet from the period turns up.

The 2025 figures, the perfect 100-point scores, and Esmeralda’s three-category sweep are covered in full on the Best of Panama and Panama Cup notes. Buyers are documented for three years so far: 2019 and 2024 both went to Saza Coffee of Japan (in 2019 as leader of a buying consortium), and in 2025 the record washed lot went to Julith Coffee of Dubai with the natural Geisha to JD.com of China.

For 2004 there is a partial, weaker attribution: a trade-press retrospective written twenty years later names the buyers who drove that $21/lb price as Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Geoff Watts of Intelligentsia Coffee, George Howell and Tom Owens of Sweet Maria’s.¹² No official BoP lot listing or buyer credit consulted here corroborates that group, so it belongs on a different footing from the 2019, 2024 and 2025 buyers above — see Stumptown Coffee Roasters, where the same claim is flagged.

To verify

The 2005, 2017, and 2019 prices above come from a single encyclopedic secondary source, which cites news reports. They are consistent with the known upward trajectory but have not been re-confirmed against official BoP results here. Treat them as reported-record claims, not settled facts, and check bestofpanama.org before quoting on camera. Intermediate years not listed (2012–2016, 2018, 2020–2023) are simply not compiled here yet. The 2024 row, by contrast, is corroborated by two independent reports — see Saza Coffee.

2007 in detail

2007 splits cleanly into one solid fact and one loud, unverifiable number.

The solid fact: Hacienda La Esmeralda won the Geisha Washed category, and the farm’s own awards list says so — 2007 sits in an unbroken washed-Geisha run of 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, picked up again in 2009 and 2010.⁴ That is the producer confirming its own win, which is as close to a primary record as this year gets.

The loud number is US$130 per pound, reported for a lot called “Esmeralda Especial”, together with a cupping score of 95.26 and an auction date of 29 May 2007. Every one of those figures comes from a single source: the sourcing blog of the Connecticut roaster Willoughby’s Coffee & Tea, trading as Roastmasters — the same blog, and the same 403-Forbidden wall, behind all of this note’s 2011 figures.⁷ It could not be read at the source. Two independent attempts to corroborate it came back empty: the farm’s own site names the 2007 win but attaches no price or score to it,⁴ and the general reference source used elsewhere in this note for early BoP prices jumps straight from 2006 to 2017 with nothing in between.⁶

To verify — the 2007 price, score, buyer, and especially the "world record" claim

All of the following are claims from one unreadable blog post, not facts:⁷

• US$130.00/lb for the “Esmeralda Especial” Geisha lot, at an auction dated 29 May 2007.
• A cupping score of 95.26 out of 100.
• The buyer being a group of seven companies including Roastmasters itself — the other six are not named anywhere consulted, so the group’s composition is unknown even within the claim.
• The post reportedly calls 130/lb a **then world record**. That directly contradicts the widely repeated **≈350/lb in 2005** recorded on this note and on Best of Panama, and the ≈350/lb **2013** record recorded on [[Hacienda La Esmeralda]]. Those three claims cannot all be true. Either the 2005 figure is misdated (the [[Hacienda La Esmeralda]] note already flags it as a probable source error for 2013), or 130/lb was never a record. Do not repeat “2007 world record” until an official sheet settles it.
• No altitude and no processing detail for the specific 2007 lot is documented anywhere. Esmeralda’s top washed Geishas generally come from plots around 1,600–1,800 m, but applying a farm-wide profile to one competition lot is inference, not record.

There is a second, sharper problem with the 2007 price, and it is the same trap this note already flags for 2011. Esmeralda’s own site states that the farm has run its own private Esmeralda Auction “since 2007”⁴ — meaning 2007 is the first year in which two separate Panamanian Geisha sales existed in the same season. “Esmeralda Especial” is a house lot name the farm uses at its own auction, not a Best of Panama category. So a $130/lb “Esmeralda Especial” price reported in 2007 may well have been paid at Esmeralda’s own sale rather than at Best of Panama. The category win is Best of Panama; the price may not be.

2008–2010 in detail

These three years are where the scanned-image problem bites hardest. Official SCAP tables exist for all three — with lot codes, prices per pound and high-bidder names — but only as pictures.³ Nothing legible about them surfaced in text anywhere.

What can be said, from the producer’s own awards list:⁴

• 2009 and 2010 — Hacienda La Esmeralda won the Geisha Washed category in both years. Confirmed by the farm.
• 2008 — Esmeralda’s awards list names no 2008 win in any category (Panama Cup, Geisha Washed, Geisha Natural or Varietal). So 2008 is the first year since the Geisha era began that the dominant farm did not take the washed title — and no source consulted names whoever did.

To verify — 2008, 2009 and 2010 winners, scores, prices and buyers

The engine report behind this note leaned on a general industry narrative that “Esmeralda continued to dominate 2008–2010 with scores above 94 and prices above US$80/lb.” No source supports any of those numbers, and the farm’s own record contradicts the 2008 part of it.⁴ Specifically undocumented in text: the overall champion for each of the three years, every cupping score, every price, every buyer name, and the non-Geisha category winners. The SCAP images are the place to look, and someone reading them by eye is the only way to fill this in.³ One caution on scope: SCAP’s tables are organised by lot category, not by overall ranking, so even a full transcription may not identify an “overall champion” for these years — the top-overall honour, the Panama Cup, is itself only loosely documented for this period. SCAP’s sheets also carry no cupping scores at all — only lot codes, titles, weights, prices and bidders — so the scores for these years are not recoverable from this archive by any means.

The lot-code trap — why “BOP-GW-07” is not a 2007 lot

A second research pass on 2007–2010 came back with what looked like a breakthrough: an official SCAP row reading BOP-GW-07 — “Nuguo Washed”, 55.00/lb, 100 lb, 5,500 total, high bidder “M.A.I.F. Trading Co. Ltd & Brave Roasters Thailand” — presented as the Best of Panama 2007 winning lot, on the reasoning that the “07” in the code meant the year.

It does not. Checked directly against SCAP’s page, that row sits in the 2017 table, and the code means lot number 7 within the Geisha Washed category — the same scheme still in use today, where GW-01 is the category winner and higher numbers mean lower placings.³ In 2017 that category ran all the way to BOP-GW-22, and the top of it was “Sophia” at 254.80/lb, not Nuguo at 55.00. So the row is real, official and correctly transcribed — and belongs to the wrong decade, describing a lot placed seventh, not first.

Two details give the game away independently, and both are worth remembering as a smell test:

• Finca Nuguo and Brave Roasters both appear in the 2025 results recorded further down this note — Nuguo took GW-03 in 2025. A farm and a buyer both active in 2017 and 2025 turning up as a “2007” record is a warning, not a discovery.
• The code scheme is rank-within-category in both years this wiki has verified directly, 2017 and 2025, and a category running past lot 20 cannot be encoding years at all.³ Any figure justified by “the code ends in 07/08/09/10, so it’s that year” should be discarded on sight.

To verify — 2007–2010 remain undocumented in text

The BOP-GW-07 correction above removes the only hard-looking number that had been offered for 2007; it does not add one. As of this note, no lot code, price, buyer or score for any 2007, 2008, 2009 or 2010 lot has been read from any legible source. The one 2007-specific source that exists — the Roastmasters/Willoughby’s blog post — was tried again at a second URL and also returns HTTP 403, so both of that blog’s 2007 pages remain unreadable.¹³⁷ What stands for these years is only what the producer confirms: Esmeralda’s washed-Geisha category wins in 2007, 2009 and 2010, and no Esmeralda win in 2008.⁴

2011 in detail

2011 is the thinnest year in this whole ledger. Where 2006 at least has the winning farm confirmed by the farm itself, 2011 has nothing confirmed by anybody. Every number below traces back to a single blog post written by a buyer — Roastmasters, the sourcing blog of the Connecticut roaster Willoughby’s Coffee & Tea — and that post cannot currently be read directly: roastmasters.com returns HTTP 403 (Forbidden) to automated requests.⁸ So the 2011 figures reach this note second-hand, through the research report behind it, with no way to check the wording at the source.

Three separate attempts to corroborate them all came back empty:

• The official competition site publishes only the current edition and carries no back-catalogue of past winners — confirmed directly.¹
• Hacienda La Esmeralda’s own awards list jumps from 2010 to 2013, naming no 2011 award in any category.⁴ That is consistent with the story below (Esmeralda is reported as placing, not winning), but it also means the farm’s own records do nothing to confirm it.
• No trade-press report, producer announcement or auction sheet from 2011 surfaced anywhere else.

To verify — every 2011 figure below rests on one unreadable blog post

These are claims, not facts. All of them come from the same buyer’s blog and none is corroborated:⁸

• 1st place overall: a Geisha lot from Finca La Valentina, sold at US$70.25/lb. Its processing is not stated, and no cupping score is given for it or for any other 2011 lot.
• 2nd place: Hacienda La Esmeralda’s “Esmeralda Especial” Geisha, sold at US$75.25/lb — reportedly more per pound than the first-place lot, which is unusual enough on its own to want a second source.
• Top non-Geisha: “Don K” from Café Kotowa, a Caturra and Typica blend, at US$20.75/lb. The official 2011 category name for non-Geisha coffees is not quoted anywhere.
• Highest prices of the sale went to two natural Geishas that were not the winners: a Don Pachi Geisha Natural at US111.50/lb** and an Esmeralda **"Colga Alfa" Geisha Natural at US88.50/lb.
• Buyer: Willoughby’s says it was in the winning group for an Esmeralda “Montaña” lot — a plot of roughly 600 lb total — and that two Montaña lots fetched US52.50** and **US53.50/lb. That is a buyer describing its own purchase, which is the strongest kind of claim here, but it is still one voice. No buyer is named for any other 2011 lot.
• No auction date, no location, and no lot altitudes are recorded anywhere consulted.

To verify — this may be two different auctions mixed together

The source post covers “Best of Panama and Esmeralda auctions 2011” — two separate sales in the same season, not one. Best of Panama is the SCAP-run national competition; the Esmeralda Special Auction is Hacienda La Esmeralda’s own private electronic sale of its own coffee, which the farm still runs today and still describes separately from its Best of Panama results.¹⁴⁴ The Esmeralda house lot names that appear above — Especial, Colga Alfa and Montaña — are the names the farm uses at its own auction. It is therefore quite possible that some or all of the Esmeralda prices listed above were paid at the Esmeralda auction rather than at Best of Panama, which would also explain why Esmeralda’s award list shows no 2011 Best of Panama result.⁴ Until the original post can be read at the source, do not quote any Esmeralda 2011 price as a Best of Panama price.

The honest summary of 2011: one farm name for the winner, a handful of prices from a buyer’s blog, no scores at all, and an unresolved question about which auction half of it happened at.

Why comparing years is harder than it looks

Two lots from two different years are rarely a clean apples-to-apples comparison:

• Edition numbering doesn’t line up with the calendar. BoP is described as founded in 1996 yet its 2025 running was called the “29th” edition — figures that don’t fully reconcile. This same unresolved discrepancy is flagged on the Best of Panama note; it means “the Nth Best of Panama” and “the year 19XX/20XX” can’t always be mapped one-to-one.
• The category structure has changed. Today’s split into Geisha Washed, Geisha Natural, and Varietals (non-Geisha) is relatively recent.¹⁵ As recently as 2017 the auction ran five categories — Geisha Washed, Geisha Natural, Traditional Natural, Traditional Washed and Pacamara — with the latter three all folded into today’s single Varietals class.³ Older results predate even that structure, so an early “winner” and a modern “category winner” are not the same kind of title. The top-overall honour, the Panama Cup, is itself only loosely documented as a formal award.
• Prices track tiny lots and single buyers. A record price reflects one auction, one lot size, one bidder — so year-to-year jumps exaggerate how much the underlying market moved.

To verify — the claimed "2005-vs-2013 discrepancy"

This note was commissioned around a supposed “2005-vs-2013 discrepancy” in the BoP results archive. No such discrepancy is documented in any Best of Panama coffee source found here: there are verifiable 2005 records but no 2013 figure surfaced, and nothing links the two years. The automated research report supplied for this topic was, in fact, entirely about motorsport “Balance of Performance” (BoP) — the FIA/ACO/IMSA racing rules — and even stray prison-statistics data; it shared only the acronym “BoP” with Best of Panama and contained no coffee content at all. The “2005-vs-2013” framing appears to be an artifact of that acronym collision, not a real coffee-archive issue. If a genuine discrepancy in BoP coffee records for those years exists, it still needs a primary source; nothing here supports it.
