Caturra
Caturra is a naturally occurring short version of Bourbon. One gene changed, the plant stopped growing tall, and Latin America spent the next century planting it — because a tree you can reach without a ladder can also be planted twice as densely, which means far more coffee per hectare.
It was found on a plantation in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, sometime between 1915 and 1918, and Brazil’s Instituto Agronômico (IAC) began formally selecting it in 1937. The name comes from Guarani and means “small”.1
That 1937 date is worth pinning down, because several coffee glossaries state that Caturra was “discovered in Brazil in 1937.” Against the World Coffee Research record, 1937 is the year the breeding institute started selection work, not the year anyone first saw the plant. Discovery is the 1915–1918 window.
Where it came from
Caturra is what geneticists call a single-gene mutation — one gene in a Bourbon population flipped, producing dwarfism (the trade calls it Dwarf/Compactism). Genetically it still sits inside the Bourbon-Typica group, on the Bourbon side.
This is not a one-off event. Bourbon threw the same dwarfing mutation at least three separate times in three countries: Caturra in Brazil, Pacas in El Salvador, Villa Sarchi in Costa Rica. Each time, farmers grabbed it immediately for the same reason.
From Brazil it travelled outward. It reached Guatemala in the 1940s, then spread through Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, and above all Colombia, where it became the backbone of the national crop — though commercial adoption in Central America took decades to build.
To verify
One industry article traces the original seeds to a natural mutation of Red Bourbon trees in Rio de Janeiro, with the first seeds found near the Minas Gerais / Espírito Santo border.2 World Coffee Research says only “a plantation in the state of Minas Gerais.” The exact farm and the specific Bourbon population it mutated from are not established by any primary record found here.
To verify
Producer and roaster sources routinely describe Red Caturra and Yellow Caturra as two established colour forms with slightly different ripening and cup expression.3 The World Coffee Research catalogue entry for Caturra records no colour variants — it lists a single variety with green leaf tips. The same gap exists in this wiki’s Bourbon note for yellow and pink Bourbon. Treat the colour split as trade usage, not a catalogued distinction.
What the plant is like

Two of those rows explain most of Caturra’s history. The planting density is the upside: five to six thousand trees per hectare is a dense stand, and dense stands are why Caturra displaced the tall old Typica and Bourbon plantings across Latin America in the mid-twentieth century. The high nutrition requirement is the catch — packed that tightly, the plants are hungry, so Caturra rewards farms that can afford fertiliser and punishes those that can’t.
The rust rating is the third act. “Very high susceptibility” to Coffee leaf rust means Caturra inherited Bourbon’s single worst weakness along with its sweetness, and that vulnerability eventually rewrote the map of what Colombia grows.
One row in that table will surprise anyone who has read a roaster’s description of Caturra. Nearly every trade and producer source calls the variety “high-yielding”,456 while World Coffee Research rates its yield potential as plain “Medium”.7
Both readings hold, and the reason is the same one this wiki untangles on the Bourbon note. Caturra out-produces the tall old Typica and Bourbon trees it replaced — enormously so, once you count the extra trees you can fit per hectare — which is what the trade means by “high-yielding.” Measured tree-for-tree against modern bred hybrids, it is merely average. Caturra’s productivity is a planting-density effect, not a per-plant one. Quote “medium” if you are comparing varieties; the farm-level jump is real either way.
To verify
A roaster-education guide states Caturra grows best between 1,200 and 2,000 metres with around 3,000 mm of annual rain. World Coffee Research doesn’t publish a single range — it makes optimal altitude depend on latitude, spanning roughly 700–1,600 m as you move away from the equator. The two aren’t strictly contradictory (one is a specialty-quality sweet spot, the other an agronomic optimum) but no source reconciles them. Don’t quote a single altitude band for the variety.
What happened in Colombia
Caturra “represented nearly half of coffee production” in Colombia until a government programme beginning in 2008 replaced billions of trees with the rust-resistant Castillo variety.
This is the clearest example anywhere in coffee of a disease deciding what a whole country plants. Colombia did not swap Caturra out because the coffee was worse — it swapped because rust was going to take the crop either way, and a resistant tree that cups slightly less brilliantly beats a susceptible tree that dies.
It also dates something this wiki has flagged twice. The Bourbon note and the Coffee leaf rust note disagree over whether the Central American rust crisis ran 2008–2013 or was centred on 2012. Colombia’s replanting programme starting in 2008 is a separate, earlier event from the Central American “big rust” epidemic of 2012 — which may be where the 2008 date entered circulation.
To verify
A Colombian coffee-education retailer states that Caturra arrived in Colombia in 1952 and spread widely over the following decade, commonly planted under shade trees.8 World Coffee Research gives arrival dates for Guatemala (1940s) but publishes none for Colombia. The date is plausible — it sits between the IAC selection work and Colombia’s mid-century expansion — but a single retailer blog is not enough to state it as fact. Cenicafé, Colombia’s national coffee research centre, would be the source to check.
The family it started
Caturra’s compact habit made it the go-to parent for breeders, so a large share of the coffee planted in Latin America today has Caturra somewhere in its pedigree.

The Catimor line is the pointed one. Breeders crossed Caturra with the Arabica × Robusta Timor Hybrid specifically to bolt rust resistance onto Caturra’s productive dwarf frame — the whole family exists to patch the one flaw Caturra inherited from Bourbon.
The Castillo row was previously flagged as unconfirmed on this note. It is now corroborated: two sources read directly for the Castillo note — a trade publication citing Cenicafé, and a French-language encyclopedia entry summarising Cenicafé’s work — independently give the parentage as Caturra × Timor Hybrid, and Cenicafé’s own technical pamphlet is reported to say the same. What has not changed is the catalogue gap: a request for the Castillo entry still returns 404, as does the entry for its parent variety Colombia. World Coffee Research’s Caturra page confirms Castillo replaced Caturra in Colombia but has never stated the parentage.
What it tastes like
World Coffee Research rates Caturra’s quality potential at altitude as “Good” — one notch below the “Very Good” it gives Bourbon. That single word is the only formal sensory rating available for the variety.
Roasters and educators consistently describe a sweet, clean, well-balanced cup with bright-to-medium acidity: citrus and brown sugar most often, with chocolate, caramel, nuts and jammy fruit turning up regularly, and delicate florals appearing at higher elevations.910 These are the trade’s shared impression from cupping tables, not measurements from a controlled sensory study — read them that way.
The practical reading: Caturra is the variety that proves altitude matters more than genetics for cup quality. The same plant is a commodity workhorse at 1,000 m and a competition-grade coffee at 1,900 m.
Caturra in specialty today
Caturra is not a trophy variety. It doesn’t command Geisha prices and it doesn’t headline auctions. What it does is fill the high-altitude blocks of very good farms, including ones better known for something else — Carmen Estate in Panama’s Paso Ancho Valley sells a fully washed Caturra grown at 1,650–1,900 m, harvested December to March, alongside the Geisha that set the 2023 Best of Panama record.11
To verify
No official competition result for a Caturra lot was confirmed here. Two specific claims are outstanding: that Carmen Estate’s Caturra won a traditional-washed category at Best of Panama in 2020 — a claim appearing on owner Dashang Group’s own site and already flagged on the Carmen Estate note — and an 85-point grade attached to a Colombian Caturra in a vendor’s video description,12 which is a private marketing grade, not a certified SCA or Cup of Excellence score. Check bestofpanama.org and the Alliance for Coffee Excellence results archives before repeating either.13
