CIFC
CIFC stands for Centro de Investigação das Ferrugens do Cafeeiro — in English, the Coffee Rust Research Center. It is a research centre in Oeiras, just outside Lisbon, Portugal, and it has occupied a building on the INIAV campus there since 1955. In 2015 it was integrated into the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) of the University of Lisbon, and its research infrastructure now sits on the ISA campus and at the Ajuda Botanical Garden.1
It has no coffee brand, no auction lots and no cafés. Almost nobody drinking coffee has heard of it. But if you have read the Catimor, Sarchimor, Timor Hybrid or Villa Sarchi notes on this wiki, you have already seen its fingerprints: those odd numbers like CIFC 832/1, CIFC 832/2, HT CIFC 4106 and CIFC 971/10 are entries in this laboratory’s register.
CIFC states its own purpose narrowly: its “principal objective has been to contribute to the development of coffee cultivars with lasting resistance to the main diseases: orange leaf rust and anthracnose of green berries (CBD)”, for the benefit of “millions of small coffee farmers”.1
Note that the mandate names two diseases, not one: rust, and Coffee berry disease — the anthracnose that rots cherries on the branch. The centre’s name only advertises the rust half.
Formally it is a centre for research and advanced training — the second half being the part outsiders usually miss.1 What that training consists of in practice is not spelled out on the centre’s own page, so this wiki does not describe it further.
Why a rust laboratory in Portugal, of all places
Coffee leaf rust — the fungus Hemileia vastatrix — is the single most destructive disease in coffee. It does not kill trees quickly; it strips their leaves, and a tree with no leaves cannot ripen fruit. Portugal grew no coffee to speak of, but it governed coffee-growing territories, and the centre was set up as a place where rust could be studied on a bench instead of in an emergency.
That turned out to be the useful arrangement. A national institute in Brazil or Kenya studies the rust it has. A dedicated centre can collect rust from everywhere and compare it — which is exactly what CIFC did, for decades, on behalf of everyone else.
What CIFC actually does: the referee’s job
The centre’s real function is less “breeding coffee” than being the referee that decides whether a coffee plant is genuinely resistant, and to what.
Rust is not one thing. It comes in physiological races — strains of the same fungus that look identical but attack different plants. A coffee tree can shrug off one race and be flattened by another. So “rust-resistant” is a meaningless claim until you say resistant to which race.
CIFC built the system that answers that. It keeps a set of differential coffee plants — reference trees with known, fixed genetics — and infects them with rust samples sent in from around the world. Which differentials get sick and which stay clean gives each rust sample a fingerprint, and that fingerprint is its race. Per a peer-reviewed review of the pathogen, “more than 50 rust physiological races and 23 coffee differentials have been identified” through this work.2
Underneath it is a gene-for-gene relationship: the plant carries resistance genes (labelled SH), the fungus carries matching attack genes, and the outcome of any meeting is decided by which pair shows up. The same review sets out where the genes come from: “Rust resistance in HDT populations is conferred by Robusta-derived genes, such as SH6, SH7, SH8, SH9 and others not yet identified, in addition to Arabica resistance genes (SH1, SH2, SH4 and SH5).”2
That single sentence is the reason Robusta genes ended up inside Arabica coffee at all. Arabica’s own resistance genes were not enough. Robusta’s were — and the Timor Hybrid was the accident that carried them across the species line.
The accession numbers
CIFC’s other half of the job is a germplasm collection: living coffee plants, kept alive for the genes they carry, each one given a register number. Per the pathogen review, “Since 1955, CIFC has received and characterized coffee and rust germplasm and supplied breeding programmes at coffee research institutions with characterized resistance sources.”2
That supply line is why CIFC numbers turn up in the parentage of varieties bred thousands of miles away:

The split between 832/1 and 832/2 is the detail worth holding onto: the two great rust-resistance families of modern coffee descend from two different plants in the same collection, distinguished only by a slash and a digit in a Portuguese ledger. The Sarchimor note follows the consequences — the 832/2 side kept noticeably more cup quality than the 832/1 side.
The breeding work, and where it went
CIFC did not only hand material out; it made crosses. Per the World Coffee Research variety catalogue’s history of T5296, “In 1967, breeders in Portugal began work to create new varieties,” and “One of the rust-resistant Timor Hybrid plants, called HDT CIFC 832/2, was crossed with compact Villa Sarchi to create hybrid 361 (H361).”3
H361 is the ancestor of the whole Sarchimor family. The name T5296 was attached later, when the material was tested at CATIE in Costa Rica — which is why this wiki’s variety tables credit the line to “CIFC, trialled at CATIE”.3 The pattern repeats across the resistance families: Portugal makes the cross, a national institute in a producing country selects, names and releases it. IHCAFE released Parainema in Honduras; ICAFE worked on the Costa Rican Catimors; CIRAD and ECOM released Marsellesa in Nicaragua; IAPAR released IAPAR 59 in Brazil. The CIFC accession sits at the top of every one of those pedigrees.
Who actually does the work
CIFC is small, and it does not publicise a staff list or a named director. The clearest public picture of who works there comes from the authorship of its own scientific output: the 2019 Molecular Plant Pathology review of Hemileia vastatrix was written by twelve researchers, all of whom give CIFC at Instituto Superior de Agronomia as their affiliation — Pedro Talhinhas, Dora Batista, Inês Diniz, Ana Vieira, Diogo N. Silva, Andreia Loureiro, Sílvia Tavares, Ana Paula Pereira, Helena G. Azinheira, Leonor Guerra-Guimarães, Vítor Várzea and Maria do Céu Silva.2
Two names recur across decades of rust literature: Vítor Várzea and Maria do Céu Silva, both listed with CIFC and with ISA’s LEAF research unit.2 That authorship block is also the most reliable public statement of the centre’s postal address — Quinta do Marquês, Oeiras — which is consistent with the Oeiras siting described above.2
What CIFC is not
Worth stating plainly, because this wiki is largely auctions and record prices: CIFC is not a producer, a roaster or a competition body. It has no lot in Best of Panama, no placement in Cup of Excellence, and no cupping score attached to its name. Its influence is entirely upstream — it shaped which trees exist, not which coffees win.
Its closest siblings here are CATIE and World Coffee Research: three non-commercial bodies working underneath the varieties rather than on the auction table. The division of labour between them is fairly clean. CATIE holds the largest public living collection in the Western Hemisphere. WCR maintains the catalogue that describes each variety. CIFC holds the rust — and the reference plants that make “resistant” a testable claim rather than a marketing word.
To verify — the 1927 discovery date conflicts with this wiki's own note
The pathogen review states that “HDT (Híbrido de Timor) populations were derived from a plant discovered on the island of Timor in 1927 exhibiting resistance to rust among ‘Typica’ coffee crops.”2 The Timor Hybrid note on this wiki explicitly records the discovery date as contested, and settles only on the plant being in farmers’ hands on Timor by the 1940s. Treat 1927 as one published claim from one review article, not as a settled date. Nothing else on this page depends on it.
To verify — the size of CIFC's collections is not published on its own site
No accession count for the coffee germplasm collection, and no isolate count for the rust collection, could be found. The centre’s official page describes the work without giving numbers, and attempts to reach subpages for its collections and history both returned HTTP 404. The figures that are stated here — more than 50 rust races and 23 coffee differentials — come from the peer-reviewed pathogen review, not from CIFC directly, and are described there as current at time of publication rather than as a running total. Do not quote a collection size for CIFC without a fresh source.
To verify — a widely-repeated "contact person" claim rests on a domain that no longer belongs to ISA
Secondary write-ups of CIFC name Dr. Maria do Céu Silva as the centre’s contact — and some go further and call her its director — citing a page on
isa-opencampus.pt, an ISA outreach site. That domain no longer resolves to ISA: it now issues a permanent redirect to an unrelated Peruvian municipal website, so the page cannot be checked and should not be treated as a live source. Her affiliation with CIFC is solidly established independently, through peer-reviewed authorship,2 but no job title for her — contact, coordinator or director — is confirmed by any source reachable today, and this wiki does not assert one. The same defunct page is the origin of a personal email address circulating for CIFC; it is deliberately not reproduced here. Use the centre’s official ISA page for contact details instead.Relatedly, some summaries state that CIFC “is currently located on the ISA campus” and was “previously located in Oeiras.” That is a simplification: the centre’s own page describes it as sited on the INIAV campus in Oeiras with research infrastructure additionally at ISA and the Ajuda Botanical Garden,1 and its 2019 postal address was still Oeiras.2 Treat “moved to Lisbon” as unconfirmed.
To verify — "bred by CIFC" is narrative, not a catalogue field
The World Coffee Research record for T5296 leaves its structured breeder field blank (shown as ”—”); the attribution to Portugal and to CIFC comes from the prose history section of the same page.3 This wiki’s Sarchimor and Villa Sarchi tables credit the line to “CIFC, trialled at CATIE”, which matches that narrative but is not a formal catalogue attribution. Also unestablished here: the exact founding act, the founding date beyond the year, and the named founders of the centre. 1955 itself is on firm ground — the official page states it both as the centre’s founding year and as the year it occupied its Oeiras building,1 and CIFC’s own scientists date the germplasm work from 1955 in the peer-reviewed literature2 — but no month, no founding decree and no first director could be confirmed from any source reachable today.
