Batian

Batian is the coffee tree Kenya built when it stopped accepting the trade-off. Every disease-resistant variety before it had bought toughness by giving up flavour, and Ruiru 11 — Kenya’s 1985 answer to a berry-disease epidemic — was no exception: excellent agronomy, a cup rated merely “Good,” and buyers who kept walking past it to get to SL28.

Batian is the second attempt. It was released by the Coffee Research Foundation — now the Coffee Research Institute inside KALRO, Kenya’s national agricultural research body — in 2010.1 It is tall where Ruiru 11 is dwarf, its beans are rated very large, it resists coffee berry disease, and World Coffee Research rates its cup quality at high altitude “Very good” — one full band above Ruiru 11 and one below the “Exceptional” that SL28 and SL34 hold.1

That single-band gap is the entire story of the variety.

The name

Batian is a mountain. It is the highest of the three summits of Mount Kenya, and the variety was named after it.23 The naming convention is worth noticing: Ruiru 11 is named after the research station’s town and a selection number — a laboratory name. Batian is named after the roof of the country. Kenya was not modest about what it thought it had.

Where it came from

From World Coffee Research’s variety record, the specialty industry’s reference catalogue:1

Batian is a composite variety — not a single cross but a blend of several stabilised pure lines released together under one name. Its ancestry pulls in SL28, SL34, Rume Sudan, N39, K7, SL4 and the Timor Hybrid.1

Two halves of that list are doing two different jobs, and it is the same bargain struck on the Catimor and Ruiru 11 notes:

  • The Kenyan halfSL28, SL34, Rume Sudan, N39, K7, SL4 — is where the flavour and the local adaptation come from. These are the trees Kenya’s reputation was built on.
  • The Timor Hybrid half is where the disease genes come from. The Timor Hybrid is a natural Arabica × Robusta cross found on the island of Timor, and it is the source of nearly every rust-resistant variety planted anywhere in the world. Because it carries Robusta DNA, WCR classifies Batian as introgressed — meaning genes from another coffee species have been bred into Coffea arabica.

Batian is also downstream of Ruiru 11, not parallel to it. It was selected from later generations of the material used on Ruiru 11’s male parent side — the quality side — which makes it a second pass at the same problem with the same genetic toolkit. The redesign kept the disease resistance and went back for the cup.

To verify

The exact release date. World Coffee Research states only the year: 2010, and that is solid.1 One roaster-tier source narrows it to 8 September 2010 as the day the Coffee Research Institute formally introduced the variety.3 No CRI, KALRO or Kenyan government document confirming that date was located. Use 2010; do not quote the day.

Three rows matter more than the rest.

Tall, and resistant. WCR singles this out explicitly: a tall variety that is also disease-resistant is a rare combination, and it is the reason WCR calls Batian well suited to smallholders.1 Dwarf varieties want intensive management — dense planting, heavy feeding, disciplined pruning. A tall tree fits an existing farm the way it already is, which matters enormously when the farm is half a hectare behind a house.

Medium nutrition, not high. Ruiru 11 demands high nutrition; Batian does not. On a smallholding where fertiliser is the binding cash constraint, that difference is real money every season.

Rust resistance is “intermediate,” not absolute. This is the row people get wrong, and it is covered next.

The resistance-versus-tolerance wrinkle

Batian is routinely marketed as rust-resistant. Roaster and merchant pages state flatly that it is “resistant to coffee berry disease and coffee leaf rust.”24

The breeder record does not say that. World Coffee Research rates Batian’s coffee berry disease response as resistant but its Coffee leaf rust response as only intermediate resistance — and WCR’s own narrative summary uses the softer word deliberately, describing the variety as combining high yields, “tolerance to coffee leaf rust,” and resistance to coffee berry disease.1 Two different words for two different diseases, in the same sentence, on the primary source.

The distinction is not pedantry. Resistant means the fungus largely fails to establish. Tolerant means it establishes and the tree carries on producing anyway. A tolerant tree still hosts rust, still spreads it, and still loses ground in a bad year. This wiki’s Coffee leaf rust and Catimor notes document what happens when the difference is ignored: Costa Rica 95 and Lempira were both released as rust-resistant and have both since been confirmed susceptible in their own countries. Rust adapts.

So the accurate statement is: Batian is resistant to coffee berry disease and tolerant of coffee leaf rust. This wiki’s Kenya and SL28 notes already record it that way, and they are right.

What it tastes like

WCR’s rating at high altitude is “Very good.”1

That places Batian in a genuinely unusual position. Nearly every introgressed variety — the whole Catimor family, Lempira, IHCAFE 90 — sits at “Low” or “Very low.” Ruiru 11 climbed to “Good,” which was already an achievement. Batian went one further. Among varieties carrying Timor Hybrid genes, “Very good” is close to the ceiling; only Anacafe 14 and a handful of others get near it.

It still is not “Exceptional.” SL28 and SL34 hold that band, and no amount of breeding has yet closed the last step. This is why a Kenyan farm that could replant its sixty-year-old SL blocks tomorrow usually doesn’t.

Descriptively, roaster profiles converge on bright, juicy acidity, citrus and blackcurrant fruit, and a clean finish — recognisably the Kenyan flavour signature, which is unsurprising given how much SL28 and SL34 is in the pedigree.2 One of those same profiles concedes Batian “may not always match a top-tier SL28, but the gap is narrower than the ‘disease-resistant hybrid’ label might suggest.”2 That is marketing prose, not a cupping panel — but it agrees with WCR’s numbers, which is the strongest thing that can be said for it.

Kenyan Batian is conventionally washed, like the rest of the national crop. Nothing about the variety requires it.

The one documented result: Gems of Yunnan 2025

Here is the fact that makes Batian more than an agronomic footnote, and it did not happen in Kenya.

In 2025 the Alliance for Coffee Excellence — the body behind Cup of Excellence — ran Gems of Yunnan, the first internationally judged, publicly scored competition for Chinese coffee. The winning lot, at 89.96 points, was a washed Batian grown at 1,650 m by Min Sai at Lincang Autumn Amber Estate Co., Ltd.5

It beat eight Geisha lots to do it.

This is, as far as this wiki can establish, the only Batian result anywhere backed by a published score on a competition organiser’s own site. The implication for the variety is larger than the implication for China. A Kenyan disease-resistant composite, planted in a Chinese province better known for commodity Catimor, outscored Panama’s export variety in front of an international jury. Whatever “Very good” means on paper, it clears 89 in a cup when the plot and the processing are right.

To verify

Details around the Yunnan result. The score, producer, farm, variety, process and altitude are ACE’s own published record and are solid.5 Two things are not. No auction price, buyer or lot size was published for the winning Batian lot — do not quote a price per pound for it. And this wiki’s Yunnan coffee note describes the panel as a 26-member jury, while ACE’s page as read here lists 19 judges across two tables (14 international, 5 China-based).5 The scores are unaffected either way, but the jury figure is in conflict between the two readings and neither should be quoted with confidence.

Bolivia, and an auction claim that does not check out

Batian has left Kenya. The best-documented example is Finca Floripondio in Samaipata, Santa Cruz department, Bolivia, a farm established in 2014 by the Rodríguez family — the producing family behind Fincas Los Rodríguez — growing Batian at around 1,710 m and processing it with carbonic maceration and lactic fermentation.2

That much is a roaster describing coffee it actually buys, which is ordinary and credible. The claim attached to it is not.

To verify

“Cup of Excellence auctions” and “high 80s to low 90s.” Ozone Coffee states that the Rodríguez family’s Batian lots “have appeared in Cup of Excellence auctions and scored in the high 80s and low 90s.”2

The Cup of Excellence part appears to be wrong. The Alliance for Coffee Excellence results archive for Bolivia shows the Bolivian programme running in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009 — and no later.6 Finca Floripondio was established in 2014.2 A farm cannot have placed in a competition that stopped five years before it existed, and Batian appears nowhere in the Bolivia 2004 results table.6

What the ACE site does list is “Los Rodriguez Collection Nº1 2022” under its Private Collection Auctions — a separate ACE programme in which a single producer’s lots are auctioned without a competition or a jury ranking.6 That is the far likelier referent, and it is not the same thing as Cup of Excellence. The scores and the auction results for that collection were not readable here, so no Batian score or price from Bolivia is documented on this wiki. Treat “high 80s to low 90s” as an unverified seller claim.

To verify

Named roaster–buyer relationships. Three were reported: Tim Wendelboe selling a “Caballero Batian Espresso,” Ozone Coffee buying from the Rodríguez family in Bolivia, and Cofmos (Lithuania) listing a Batian.24 The Ozone relationship is stated on Ozone’s own page and stands.2 The Tim Wendelboe product page cited in the source material returns a 404 and could not be read, so it is recorded here as a reported past listing only, without a link. None of the three publishes a cupping score or an FOB price for its Batian, so no number should be attached to any of them.

What agronomists claim, and what the breeder actually says

Consultant and merchant pages carry a set of specific field figures for Batian that do not appear in the breeder record — and one of them contradicts it outright.

To verify

Altitude, density, soil and ripening speed — all from non-breeder sources, one in direct conflict with WCR.

  • Altitude. A Kenyan agronomy consultancy states Batian “thrives at 1,900–2,300 m.”7 World Coffee Research classes Batian’s optimal altitude requirement as low, using the latitude-banded thresholds it applies across its catalogue.1 These are not the same claim, and they point in opposite directions. The Gems of Yunnan winner was grown at 1,650 m5 — below the consultancy’s stated range and consistent with WCR. Do not quote 1,900–2,300 m as a requirement.
  • Planting density. The same source recommends ~1,900 trees/ha;7 WCR records 2,000–3,000 plants/ha under multiple-stem pruning.1 Close, but not identical, and only WCR’s figure is breeder-sourced.
  • Soil. Batian is reported very sensitive to acidic soils.7 No WCR soil rating exists to check this against.
  • Ripening. Faster cherry ripening than traditional Kenyan varieties is claimed by the same consultancy and echoed by a Kenyan roaster.78 Unquantified and not in the breeder record.

WCR’s nematode susceptibility rating1 is the one agronomic weakness that is breeder-confirmed, and it is the one the marketing pages tend to omit.

How it actually reaches buyers

Mostly, it doesn’t — not by name.

Kenyan coffee is catalogued by screen size, not by plant. As the Nairobi Coffee Exchange note records, SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11 and Batian are commonly harvested and sold mixed together under a grade letter, which is why variety-level Kenyan auction records essentially do not exist. Roaster pages confirm the consequence from the other end: Batian is “largely found blended with SL varieties in Kenyan lots rather than as a single varietal,” and pure Kenyan Batian lots remain rare.2

There is also a propagation quirk worth knowing. Because Ruiru 11 is an F1 hybrid whose seed does not breed true, Kenyan farms convert to it — and to Batian — by top-working: cutting an established tree back and grafting the new variety onto the existing root system, so the farm changes variety without losing years of growth.1 Batian being tall makes it a natural fit for that, since it does not need the trellised, densely planted management a dwarf tree wants.

So a drinker’s most likely encounter with Batian is an anonymous fraction of a bag labelled “Kenya AA” — and their most likely encounter with a named Batian is a lot from somewhere that is not Kenya at all.

Why it matters

Batian is the closest the disease-resistance project has come to winning its own argument.

For fifty years the deal was explicit and the whole industry accepted it: you could have a tree that survives, or a tree that tastes like something, and the Timor Hybrid genes that gave you the first reliably cost you the second. Castillo fought that fight in Colombia, Lempira lost it in Honduras, Ruiru 11 fought it to a draw in Kenya. Batian is the first one to come back with “Very good,” a very large bean, medium nutrition demand, a tall frame a smallholder can actually manage — and a first-place finish at 89.96 in an internationally judged competition.

It still is not SL28. The last band is unclaimed, and the plant is only tolerant of rust rather than resistant to it, which means the clock that ran out on Costa Rica 95 is running here too.

But the interesting thing about Batian is how little of its story is Kenyan. Kenya’s grading system dissolves it into a screen size before anyone can taste it deliberately. Its one documented triumph happened in Yunnan, 8,000 kilometres away, in a competition Kenya has no equivalent of. A country bred a tree to save its own coffee industry, then built a market that cannot tell anyone it worked.
