Timor Hybrid
The Timor Hybrid — Híbrido de Timor in Portuguese, shortened in the trade to HdT, HDT or HT — is the single most consequential coffee plant nobody set out to make. It appeared on its own in a plantation on the island of Timor, in what is now Timor-Leste, as a spontaneous cross between two different species of coffee: Coffea arabica, the one specialty coffee is made from, and Coffea canephora, the hardier plant sold as Robusta (Slow Food Ark of Taste; Coffee Consulate, both accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch).
That accident mattered because Robusta shrugs off Coffee leaf rust and Arabica does not. The Timor Hybrid behaves like an Arabica — same size, same chromosome count, same farming — while carrying resistance genes from the other side of its family. It is the bridge breeders had been looking for, and it is why Catimor, Sarchimor and most other rust-resistant Arabicas on farms today exist at all.
You will almost never drink it. HdT is a breeding parent, not a commercial variety. It sits in the pedigree of coffees you do drink, one or two generations back.
The plant that shouldn’t have worked
Arabica and Robusta don’t normally interbreed successfully, because they don’t have the same number of chromosomes. Arabica is tetraploid — four sets, 44 chromosomes (2n = 4x = 44). Robusta is diploid — two sets, 22 chromosomes (2n = 2x = 22). A cross between them usually produces a sterile or unviable plant.
The Timor Hybrid came out tetraploid like Arabica, fertile, and crossable with ordinary Arabica varieties (Coffee Consulate, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch; Híbrido de Timor — German Wikipedia, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch). The Arabica parent was Typica — the old heirloom that Portuguese planters had put in the ground on Timor.
In the genetics vocabulary the variety catalogues use, everything descended from HdT is “introgressed”: DNA from another species has been bred into Coffea arabica. That word is the reason Catimor and its relatives are filed apart from heirlooms like Bourbon and Typica.
When it was found — and why the date is contested
To verify
The discovery year is genuinely disputed and no source checked here settles it. Slow Food’s Ark of Taste states HdT “was discovered in 1927 in a plantation of typica coffee… that had been established in 1917.” Coffee Consulate, citing Bettencourt (1973), states the first plant was “discovered and described in 1917” and registered as HT CIFC 4106. German Wikipedia hedges to “1917 or 1927,” and adds a specific location — Matanoba, in Fatubessi, Ermera, on an estate of the Sociedade Agrícola Pátria e Trabalho (SAPT) — that no other source consulted here corroborates. All three pages were fetched on 2026-07-23. Note that Slow Food’s two dates are internally coherent (plantation 1917, hybrid spotted 1927), which is a point in favour of 1927 for the plant and 1917 for the plantation — but that reading is inference, not a sourced fact. Do not state a single discovery year as fact.
What is not in dispute: the plant arose in a Typica plantation in Portuguese Timor, it is catalogued by researchers as HT CIFC 4106, and it was in farmers’ hands on Timor by the 1940s (Slow Food, confirmed via WebFetch).
How one tree reached the whole coffee world
The route out of Timor ran through Portugal. Rust had already destroyed Ceylon’s coffee industry once (see Coffee leaf rust), and by the 1950s it was threatening the Americas. Portugal set up the Centro de Investigação das Ferrugens do Cafeeiro (CIFC) — literally the Coffee Rust Research Centre — in Oeiras in 1955, with American backing, precisely because Latin American plantations were at risk. CIFC is now hosted by the Instituto Superior de Agronomia at the University of Lisbon, and still describes its mission as developing “cultivars of coffee plants with lasting resistance to the main diseases: orange leaf rust and anthracnose of green fruit (CBD)” (CIFC — Instituto Superior de Agronomia, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch; founding date and Oeiras location also on German Wikipedia, confirmed via WebFetch).
The germplasm went with it. Seeds spread to other Indonesian islands in the late 1950s and 1960s, and from there to research institutes across the coffee-producing world, where breeders crossed them with Arabica to create rust-resistant cultivars such as Catimor and Sarchimor (Slow Food, confirmed via WebFetch). Coffee Consulate names Kenya, Brazil (1976), Colombia and Costa Rica as the first destinations, with material sourced from CIFC and two other research centres.
Back home, the story went the other way. Slow Food reports that the original Timorese plantations “were abandoned in the aftermath of the Indonesian invasion of 1975, and now exist in a semi-wild state” — which is why HdT is on the Ark of Taste at all: it is a genetic resource at risk in the one place it came from.
To verify
German Wikipedia reports that the original mother plant was rediscovered on 29 September 2012 at Mata Nova, around 840 m above sea level, citing Correia et al. (2013). No second source consulted here mentions the rediscovery, and the underlying paper was not read. Treat it as a single-source claim.
What it gave the coffee world
The Timor Hybrid’s descendants are named after it, portmanteau-style — the family tree is legible in the names themselves.

The Catimor and Sarchimor rows are confirmed independently by Slow Food and Coffee Consulate (both fetched 2026-07-23). This wiki’s SL28 note independently records that Kenya’s Ruiru 11 and Batian both carry Timor Hybrid in their pedigrees, per the World Coffee Research catalogue.
To verify
The Cavimor, Icatú and SLN9 rows come from a single source (Coffee Consulate, accessed 2026-07-23), which German Wikipedia repeats — the two are not independent, since Wikipedia cites Coffee Consulate directly. Coffee Consulate also groups HdT into what it calls the largest “Arabicoid” group of Arabica × Robusta hybrids, alongside S795. Neither the full six-line list nor the Arabicoid framing was confirmed against a breeding-programme or peer-reviewed record here.
To verify
The claim that “nearly all” rust-resistant Arabica varieties descend from HdT is trade lore, not a measured statistic — the research report behind this note flags it as such, and no source consulted quantifies it. Likewise, no source gives global planted area for pure HdT versus its descendants, so any percentage figure you see should be treated as invented until sourced.
The resistance itself — and a conflict this wiki has to name
HdT’s value is that it resists Coffee leaf rust, and secondarily coffee berry disease, root-knot nematodes and some bacterial diseases (Coffee Consulate, confirmed via WebFetch). Peer-reviewed work exists on exactly this: Silva et al. (2018) in Euphytica studied “the Híbrido de Timor germplasm: identification of molecular diversity and resistance sources to coffee berry disease and leaf rust” (DOI 10.1007/s10681-018-2231-2, record located via Europe PMC, accessed 2026-07-23) — the paper itself was not read here, only its indexed record.
To verify
A gene attribution conflicts with an existing note in this wiki. Coffee Consulate and German Wikipedia both name SH3 as the key rust-resistance gene HdT contributes, describing it as inherited from the Robusta side. But this wiki’s Coffee leaf rust note, drawing on a peer-reviewed pathogen review, states that resistance genes SH1, SH2, SH4 and SH5 come from Arabica and SH6–SH9 come from Robusta — SH3 is in neither list. The two accounts cannot both be right about SH3’s origin, and the primary literature was not read here to resolve it. Do not state that HdT’s rust resistance comes from SH3 as a plain fact. The safe, well-supported statement is simply that HdT carries multiple rust-resistance genes from its C. canephora parent.
To verify
German Wikipedia states HdT is “immune against 23 variants of Hemileia vastatrix” and that it “shares two thirds of its genome” with Arabica. Neither figure appears in any other source consulted, and neither was traced to the underlying study. Single-source; do not quote as fact.
The wider lesson from HdT’s descendants is sobering and is documented in this wiki’s Catimor note: rust adapts. Costa Rica 95, a Catimor bred from HdT for rust resistance, has since been confirmed susceptible to rust in Costa Rica by World Coffee Research. Resistance bred in the 1970s is not resistance forever.
What it tastes like
Honestly: nobody consulted here can tell you, because the sources contradict each other and none of them cupped it properly.
To verify
Two sources give opposite verdicts on HdT’s cup, and neither presents cupping data. CoffeeFactz describes Timor Hybrid’s quality as below pure Arabica — “strong, bitter, less aromatic,” with reduced acidity and sweetness — attributing this to the Robusta genes (CoffeeFactz, accessed 2026-07-23). Coffee Consulate argues the opposite, describing “stone fruit notes, with tones of apricot, peach, cherry, mango and plums” plus “vanilla and caramel flavours,” and framing the poor reputation as prejudice (Coffee Consulate, confirmed via WebFetch). No cupping score, SCA score, competition result, auction price or buyer record for any Híbrido de Timor lot was found or verified here — not one, across Cup of Excellence, Best of Panama, ACE or CQI records. Both descriptions above are marketing prose. If you need a number, there isn’t one.
There is also no World Coffee Research catalogue entry for the Timor Hybrid. A request for /varieties/timor-hybrid returns 404 (checked 2026-07-23). The catalogue documents HdT only indirectly, through the accession numbers of its descendants — Timor Hybrid 832/1 and Timor Hybrid 1343 appear in the parentage fields of the Catimor lines, which is part of why that family is not uniform.
Where it grows, and what it means to Timor-Leste
To verify
Origin-level facts about Timor-Leste come from a single blog-tier source (Coffee & Tea Culture, accessed 2026-07-23, not fetched): that the country’s main varieties are Typica, Híbrido de Timor and Catimor; that coffee grows at roughly 1,200–1,800 m; that processing is predominantly washed with some natural; that key regions are Ermera, Ainaro, Liquiçá, Aileu, Manufahi and Bobonaro, with Maubisse a named sub-origin; that production is smallholder and cooperative with no plantation sector and much of it organic and fair-trade certified; and that coffee is Timor-Leste’s largest non-oil export, with roughly one-third of households growing it. None of this was confirmed against a government, ICO or exporter-association source. The Ermera detail is at least consistent with German Wikipedia’s placement of the original discovery in that district.
Why it matters
Specialty coffee spends most of its attention on varieties that cup well. The Timor Hybrid is the counter-example: a plant of almost no interest on a cupping table that quietly determined what half the world’s farms could grow at all. Every argument about Catimor tasting flat, every replanting programme after a rust epidemic, every “disease-resistant” tag on a variety catalogue entry traces back to one unplanned seedling in a Portuguese-owned plot on a small island — a plot that was then abandoned to war and now sits half-wild.
That is the trade-off named in Coffee leaf rust, seen from its source. Heirlooms cup better and get sick. HdT’s descendants stay alive and cup flatter. The whole modern breeding effort — World Coffee Research’s F1 hybrids included — is an attempt to stop having to choose.

The Timor Hybrid is a naturally occurring plant, not a company or a bred proprietary line, so it has no site of its own. CIFC is the institution that holds and distributes the germplasm; Slow Food’s Ark of Taste is the conservation record for the original Timorese population.
