Maria do Céu Silva is a Portuguese plant pathologist — a scientist who studies plant disease — based at CIFC, the coffee rust research centre in Oeiras, outside Lisbon, and at its parent university’s agricultural school, the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA) of the University of Lisbon.12

She owns no farm, sells no coffee and has never been near an auction table. Her subject is much smaller than a farm: what happens inside a single coffee leaf in the first day or two after a rust spore lands on it, and why some leaves stop the fungus dead while others do not. That question is upstream of nearly every rust-resistant coffee tree planted today.

What she works on, in plain terms

Coffee leaf rust is a fungus, Hemileia vastatrix. It does not rot the tree or poison the cherry — it strips the leaves, and a tree with no leaves cannot ripen fruit. Whether a given coffee plant survives an attack is settled in the first hours, invisibly, at the scale of individual cells.

Her best-known personal contribution is describing that moment. She is first author of a 2002 paper in Physiological and Molecular Plant Pathology titled “Hypersensitive cell death and post-haustorial defence responses arrest the orange rust (Hemileia vastatrix) growth in resistant coffee leaves.”3

Unpacked, that title says something quite striking about how a resistant coffee plant defends itself. The rust pushes a feeding structure — a haustorium — into a living leaf cell and draws nutrients out of it. A resistant plant’s answer is not to fight the fungus but to kill its own cells around the invasion point. The infected patch dies on purpose, the fungus loses the living tissue it was feeding on, and the attack stalls. That deliberate local suicide is what plant pathologists call a hypersensitive response, and her work traced it in coffee specifically.

This is why a laboratory in a country that grows no coffee matters. “Rust-resistant” is a marketing phrase until somebody can show, at cell level, what resistance physically consists of and whether a particular tree actually does it.

The 2017 review — the standard reference

She is the final author of “The coffee leaf rust pathogen Hemileia vastatrix: one and a half centuries around the tropics,” published in Molecular Plant Pathology, written by twelve researchers who all give CIFC at ISA as their affiliation.1 In science, last position on a paper of that shape usually marks a senior researcher of the group rather than the person who did the bench work — though nothing consulted here states her role in so many words.

That review is the source this wiki leans on for the numbers behind rust races and coffee differentials, and it is the document most likely to be read by anyone outside Portugal who encounters her name. Her co-author Vítor Várzea is listed as the paper’s corresponding author.1

The pattern is the same one this wiki keeps finding under the varieties: Portugal characterises the disease and the resistance, national programmes elsewhere turn it into a tree a farmer can plant. The 2004 Liberica paper is the clearest single example — the rust genes that make modern resistant varieties work came from outside Arabica, and somebody had to prove they had actually crossed over.

A research brief identifies her full name as Maria do Céu Machado Lavado da Silva, citing a profile on Ciência Vitae, Portugal’s national research-CV platform.4 Attempts to open that profile from here failed on a TLS certificate error, twice, so its contents were never read directly. What makes the identification credible anyway is that the brief reports the profile giving the professional address Quinta do Marquês, Oeiras and linking to the CIFC page at ISA — the exact address and exact centre on her peer-reviewed affiliation.1 That is a strong match, but it is an inference drawn across two sources, not a statement either source makes. Treat the longer name as probable, not confirmed.

To verify — she is repeatedly called CIFC's contact or director, and no reachable source says so

Secondary write-ups name Dr. Maria do Céu Silva as CIFC’s contact person, and some call her its director. The CIFC note on this wiki already flags this: the page those write-ups cite sat on an ISA outreach domain that no longer belongs to ISA, and CIFC’s own official page lists no director, coordinator or named staff at all — confirmed again here.2 Her affiliation is solid through peer-reviewed authorship.1 Her title is not. To verify — this wiki gives two different years for the same review paper

The CIFC note describes the Hemileia vastatrix review as 2019. The article record itself gives 2017.1 Most likely one refers to the journal issue and the other to a database deposit or an online-first date, but no source consulted states which. Use 2017 until somebody checks the journal issue, and do not treat the two as different papers — the title, journal and twelve-author list are identical.

To verify — a research brief floated Brazilian coffee businesses under this name, with no evidence behind them

The brief that prompted this note surfaced two unrelated Brazilian coffee entities sharing the surname Silva — a producer brand called Café Silva in Alpinópolis, Minas Gerais, and the Cooxupé growers’ cooperative in Guaxupé — and stated explicitly that no source connects either one to a person of this name. Recorded here only so the same dead end is not walked twice: there is no evidence she is a coffee producer, farm owner, cooperative member, competitor or Q grader, in Brazil or anywhere else.

Why she is worth a note at all

Specialty coffee’s public story is a story about people: the producer on the bag, the barista on stage, the roaster with a point of view. This wiki is largely made of prices and placings.

She is the counter-case, and a fairly extreme one. A whole branch of the industry — every Catimor and Sarchimor planted, every variety catalogue entry that says “resistant to rust” — depends on somebody having established what resistance actually is, in a plant, at cell scale, over decades. The people who did that work are almost entirely absent from coffee’s public record. Her name appears in a wiki like this one only because it is printed at the end of a paper that other people cite.
