CIRAD
CIRAD is a French public research organization for tropical and Mediterranean agriculture. Its full name is Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement; in English, the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development. It describes itself as “the French agricultural research and international cooperation organization working for the sustainable development of tropical and Mediterranean regions,” working in more than a hundred countries.1
It is a public industrial and commercial establishment (EPIC) — a French legal form for a state body that also trades commercially — founded in 1984 out of a merger of nine earlier institutes, one of which was the Institut français du café, du cacao et autres plantes stimulantes, the French coffee and cocoa institute. It has a staff of 1,650, including 856 researchers.2
CIRAD is not a farm, a roaster or a certifier. It appears in specialty coffee for one reason: it is the institute standing behind most of the modern F1 hybrid coffee varieties, and behind the propagation technique that made them affordable. Its name is on the breeder line of the World Coffee Research variety catalogue over and over, usually as CIRAD–ECOM or inside the six-institution Central American consortium.
What an F1 hybrid is, and why it was stuck
An F1 hybrid is the first generation of a cross between two genetically distant parents. In coffee, that first generation is unusually vigorous: it out-yields and often out-cups both parents. The problem is the second generation — seed saved from an F1 tree does not breed true, so the farmer cannot replant from their own cherry.
The historical workaround was cloning: growing each new plant individually in a laboratory. That is far too expensive to hand to a smallholder. So for decades the best-performing coffee varieties in the world existed mainly in trial plots.
CIRAD’s contribution was to attack that bottleneck from both ends — first by industrialising the lab, then by finding a way around the lab entirely.
Somatic embryogenesis: making hybrids by the million
Somatic embryogenesis means growing a whole plant from an ordinary body cell — a leaf fragment, say — rather than from a fertilised seed. Every plant produced is a genetic copy of the tree the cell came from, which is exactly what an F1 hybrid needs.

Plants went mainly to Nicaragua, with distribution across El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Peru.3
The plain-English version: a technique that used to produce experimental plants one at a time now produces them by the tank-load, and the output is measured in millions of trees planted on real farms in Central America. That is the practical bridge between a plant-breeding paper and a coffee you can buy.

Starmaya is the one worth understanding. In 2001 CIRAD researchers screening Ethiopian accessions at the CATIE germplasm bank in Costa Rica found a naturally male-sterile coffee plant — a tree producing no pollen of its own — and named it CIR-SM01.6 Plant it next to Marsellesa and the wind does the crossing: every cherry the sterile mother sets is necessarily a hybrid. The seed garden that does this went into La Cumplida farm in Nicaragua in 2009, and produces roughly half a million hybrid seeds per hectare at about half the cost of in-vitro plantlets.67 World Coffee Research calls the result “the only F1 hybrid in the world that professional seed producers can propagate by seed, rather than through costly biotechnology.”5
So CIRAD solved the same problem twice, in opposite directions. First it made the laboratory cheap enough to scale. Then it found a cross that skips the laboratory altogether.
The public–private shape of it
CIRAD’s coffee work runs through partnerships rather than alone, and the partners are of two kinds.
Public research bodies — CATIE in Costa Rica, and the national coffee institutes of Central America: ICAFE (Costa Rica), PROCAFE (El Salvador), ANACAFÉ (Guatemala) and IHCAFE (Honduras).3 That group is recorded in the World Coffee Research catalogue as the breeder of Centroamericano and Esperanza.
A commercial trader — ECOM, one of the largest green-coffee trading houses in the world, which supplied the industrial scale-up in Nicaragua from 2002 and remains the operating half of the alliance producing 2–3 million plants a year.3
That second pairing is unusual enough to notice. A French state research institute and a global commodity trader jointly own the pipeline that puts hybrid coffee trees in Central American soil. It is efficient, and it is also why CIRAD’s varieties reached farms while other institutes’ trial results did not. To verify — the productivity and profitability figures
A trade-magazine account of the CIRAD–ECOM partnership reports that the new F1 varieties delivered 130% higher productivity after four years and 75% greater productivity after seven years than traditional varieties, and gives a seven-year net present value of US
11,244 per hectare** for the F1s against **US5,774 per hectare for traditional varieties.8 That page returned HTTP 403 when fetched here, so the numbers rest on the research report’s summary of a single trade outlet, with no underlying study located. They are plausible in shape — F1 vigour is real and documented3 — but the specific percentages and dollar figures should not be quoted as established until the source study is found.
Wild coffee species
Beyond arabica and robusta, CIRAD has worked on rarely-grown wild Coffea species — plants that may tolerate heat better than arabica does, which matters for Climate change and coffee.
To verify — the December 2020 tasting
A trade report states that CIRAD explored Coffea stenophylla, Coffea brevipes and Coffea congensis, and that a tasting session was held on 10 December 2020 with three CIRAD researchers and 12 cuppers from coffee businesses across Europe; that the session reassured researchers the three species are drinkable and that some may have qualities “as good as a specialty coffee”; that CIRAD did not disclose exact results; and that the next step was exporting seed to study the species at different altitudes.9 The article returned HTTP 403 when fetched here. A separate peer-reviewed Nature Plants paper on Coffea stenophylla sensory evaluation, with CIRAD among the author institutions, exists but was behind an authentication redirect and could not be read here — so the specific date, headcount and quotations above are unconfirmed, and no cupping score for any wild species should be inferred.
To verify — where CIRAD is actually headquartered
The research behind this note describes CIRAD as headquartered in Montpellier, and CIRAD’s own site foregrounds Montpellier as its base.1 A tertiary source instead places the registered head office in the Tropical Agronomy Garden in Paris, with two research centres in France, at Montpellier and Montferrier-sur-Lez.2 These are not necessarily in conflict — a registered office and an operating campus are different things — but until a CIRAD legal or annual-report page is read directly, describe Montpellier as CIRAD’s main research base rather than flatly as its headquarters.
What CIRAD is not
Worth stating plainly, because much of this wiki is auctions and record prices: CIRAD is a research organization, not a producer, and there is no coffee lot called “CIRAD.”
To verify — no lot-level record exists
No competition placement, Cup of Excellence or Best of Panama result, cupping score, auction price, buyer name, farm altitude or processing method for anything sold under the CIRAD name was found in any source consulted for this note. The research report behind it reached the same conclusion explicitly. The quality ratings attached to CIRAD’s varieties — Starmaya’s “very good,” Marsellesa’s “good” — are the World Coffee Research catalogue’s categorical judgement of a variety’s ceiling, not scores for any bag of coffee.45 If you see a numeric score attributed to CIRAD, it is a seller’s number. Why it matters
The whole modern breeding effort is an attempt to escape a bad trade: heirloom varieties like Typica and Bourbon taste wonderful and die of Coffee leaf rust; the Catimor rust-resistant workhorses survive and cup flat. F1 hybrids are the way out of that trade — genuinely resistant, genuinely productive, and genuinely good in the cup.
CIRAD’s role was less about inventing that idea than about making it deliverable. Millions of hybrid plants in Nicaraguan and Central American soil, and in Starmaya a hybrid a seed producer can multiply without a laboratory at all, are the difference between a promising variety and a variety a farmer can plant.
