F1 hybrid
An F1 hybrid is the first generation of offspring from a cross between two genetically distant parents. World Coffee Research puts it in one sentence: “F1 hybrid varieties are created by crossing genetically distinct parents (for example, a wild Ethiopian variety x Caturra). The offspring of the cross are first-generation (F1) hybrids.”1
The reason breeders bother is an effect biologists call hybrid vigour (or heterosis): when two unrelated parents are crossed, the first generation often outperforms both of them. In coffee that shows up as more cherry per tree, better disease resistance, and — unusually for a bred variety — no loss of flavour. WCR’s summary: F1 hybrids “tend to have significantly higher production than non-hybrids, while maintaining high cup quality and disease resistance.”1
That last part is what makes them a genuinely new thing. The older rust-resistant families bought their resistance by giving up the cup — Catimor is the cautionary tale, rated low in quality on the same catalogue that rates the hybrids very good. F1 hybrids are the first serious attempt to stop paying that price.
The catch: you cannot save the seed
Here is the trade-off, and it governs everything else on this page.
Plant a Bourbon seed and you get a Bourbon tree. Plant the seed of an F1 hybrid and you get a scatter of different plants, most of them worse than the parent. The genetics that make the first generation so strong depend on the two parent lines being different; the second generation shuffles those differences apart again. WCR’s variety record for Centroamericano states it flatly: “Seeds taken from hybrid plants will not have the same characteristics as the parent plants… The variety should only be reproduced through clonal propagation.”2
Clonal propagation means every new tree is a physical copy of the original rather than its child — grown in a laboratory from a fragment of plant tissue, a technique called somatic embryogenesis. It works, and it is expensive. WCR: F1 hybrids “are more expensive and harder to mass produce—typically they need to be purchased from experienced nurseries via clonal propagation.”1
So a farmer planting an F1 hybrid gives up something real: the ability to replant from their own cherry. They have to go back to a nursery and buy plants every time. That single fact, more than any agronomic weakness, is why the best-performing coffee trees in the world are still not the ones most people grow. How an F1 hybrid gets made
The recipe is consistent across nearly every named example: take a modern, compact, rust-resistant Latin American line, and cross it with wild or landrace material from Ethiopia or Sudan.
The modern parent brings dwarf stature, high yield and introgressed disease genes traceable back to the Timor Hybrid; the wild parent brings the genetic distance that produces the vigour, plus flavour. Cultivated Arabica is famously narrow — almost every tree in the Americas descends from a handful of founders, the story told in Typica and Bourbon — so wild African material is where the “distant” in “genetically distant parents” has to come from. Germplasm collections such as CATIE’s exist precisely to hold it.
None of this is genetic engineering. The crosses are made by manual pollination — taking pollen from one plant and putting it on the flowers of another — and MIT Technology Review, reporting on the CATIE programme, notes explicitly that the resulting plants “are not considered genetically modified organisms.”3
The named F1 hybrids
World Coffee Research lists six F1 hybrids already in commercial hands: Centroamericano, Mundo Maya, Starmaya, Milenio and Evaluna in Latin America, and Ruiru 11 in Kenya.1 Three have notes or detailed records in this wiki.

Centroamericano is the most fully documented of them. Its catalogue record reads: very high yield, highly resistant to Coffee leaf rust, very good cup quality at high altitude, dwarf stature — and susceptible to nematodes, which is the one weak line.2 The catalogue credits it with “production increases of 22–47% over the standard varieties in Central America.”2 MIT Technology Review, writing about the same variety, gives a compatible figure from a different direction: “over 20% more coffee beans than average per hectare,” with hybrid vigour measured at “20% to 50% higher than their parents’.”3

The competition record
For a long time the honest answer to “has an F1 hybrid ever actually won anything?” was that nobody could point to a lot. That has changed, and the evidence is about as good as this wiki gets: the Alliance for Coffee Excellence’s own published results for Cup of Excellence in Nicaragua.
One farm is responsible for both entries — Las Promesas de San Blas, in Nueva Segovia, farmed by Gonzalo Adán Castillo Moreno. It placed second in the country two years running.

ACE’s results table is the primary record, and for 2017 it publishes no variety at all — the identification of that lot as Centroamericano comes from Barista Magazine, whose producer and farm names match ACE’s table exactly: the 90+ score, it wrote, “establishes these new F1 varieties as entirely viable at the highest levels of quality.”8 For 2018 ACE itself lists the variety as “Hybrid,” and a second lot that year, at rank 11, was published the same way.7
Two things are worth reading off these four rows.
First, the score is real. An F1 hybrid cupped at 90 in a blind national competition, seated among the Geisha and Pacamara lots — in 2018 the only coffee that beat it was a natural Red Pacamara at 91.80.7 The old assumption that breeding for rust resistance must be paid for in the cup does not survive contact with this result.
Second, the price did not follow the score. Both hybrid lots fetched about 15 a pound** while the winner just above them took **31.60.7 Buyers are paying for a variety name as much as for a number, and “Hybrid” is not yet a name that sells. It is the same pattern Nicaragua’s 2025 auction shows from the other direction, where a 90.50 Maracaturra went for 14 a pound and a lower-scoring Geisha took 88.20. See Green coffee auctions.
To verify — the buyer, and the 2017 lot's variety
Two details around these results are not settled here. (a) The research report behind this note states that Maruyama Coffee of Japan placed the winning bid on the 2017 Centroamericano lot, sourcing it to Daily Coffee News; that page returned HTTP 403 when fetched here, and ACE’s results table publishes prices but no buyer names, so the buyer is unconfirmed. (b) The same report gives the 2017 score as both 90.5 and 90 and describes the 2017 lot as honey-processed. ACE settles the score at 90.506 — Barista Magazine’s “90” is a rounding8 — but the honey process belongs to the 2018 lot, not the 2017 one;76 the report appears to have merged two competitions a year apart at the same farm. A second Daily Coffee News piece, F1 Hybrids Excel at the 2018 Nicaragua Cup of Excellence, was also unreachable (HTTP 403), so its contents back nothing above. Finally, ACE’s 2017 table names no variety, so Centroamericano rests on trade press, not on the official record.
The current trials
The F1 story is not finished — the varieties above are the first generation of a programme still running. World Coffee Research’s F1 Hybrid Trials, billed as “a new class of coffee varieties for climate change,” work like this:1

The two numbers that matter from the finalists: a 28% average yield increase over the commercially available control varieties they were tested against, and an average SCA cup score above 84 for three of the four.1 Eighty is the specialty threshold, so above 84 is solidly good coffee — not Geisha territory, but well clear of the bar, from trees that also out-produce the standard by more than a quarter.
Note the dates. Crosses made in 2015 reach pre-commercial testing in 2024 and finish it in 2031. Sixteen years from pollen to a plant a farmer can buy is normal for coffee breeding, and it is worth remembering whenever someone describes a variety as a quick answer to a changing climate.
Why they matter
The bad trade at the centre of coffee agronomy is this: the heirlooms taste wonderful and die of Coffee leaf rust; the rust-resistant workhorses survive and cup flat. Every breeding programme since the 1970s has been an attempt to get both, and F1 hybrids are the first class of varieties that plausibly does.
What has held them back is not performance but plumbing — the cost of making the plants. CIRAD and ECOM attacked that by industrialising the laboratory, producing 2 to 3 million hybrid plants a year in Nicaragua. Starmaya attacked it from the other side, using a naturally pollen-less mother plant so that an ordinary field of trees produces hybrid seed by itself. Whether F1 hybrids become ordinary or stay a specialty curiosity depends almost entirely on which of those routes gets cheap first.
What is not established
To verify — the Starbucks "Nicaragua Diamond" story
Global Coffee Report is the source for a commercial chapter that no other outlet consulted here covers: that ECOM signed a contract with CIRAD in 2004 to develop a new-generation variety; that Starbucks bought the resulting F1 hybrid from ECOM in early 2012 and branded it “Nicaragua Diamond” for its Starbucks Reserve line; that demo plots ran in El Salvador, Costa Rica and Mexico before moving to 70 sites in Nicaragua with 1,000 trees; and that an economic study found 130% higher productivity after four years, 75% after seven, with a net present value of US
11,244 per hectare** against **US5,774 for traditional varieties. Both Global Coffee Report pages returned HTTP 403 when fetched here, so all of it rests on a single trade outlet summarised at second hand, with no underlying study located. The CIRAD note carries the same flag on the same figures. Treat the whole passage as a claim, not a record — and note that no lot-level auction price or farm-gate price for Nicaragua Diamond was found anywhere.
To verify — "four hybrids released in 2010"
Global Coffee Report states that Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Nicaragua worked with CIRAD and CATIE to release four F1 hybrids in 2010. The World Coffee Research catalogue confirms 2010 as the release year for Centroamericano and confirms the six-institute consortium behind it,2 but gives no release year at all for Esperanza4 and names no set of four. The GCR page was not readable here (HTTP 403). The 2010 date for Centroamericano is solid; the count of four is not.
To verify — cupping scores attributed to F1 hybrids
Several secondary pages put numbers on these varieties that the primary sources do not support, and they disagree with each other. One overview site claims F1 lots including Starmaya and Centroamericano have scored above 85, with some reaching 88–90; Wikipedia’s Starmaya article instead reports 82.5 for Starmaya against 83.13 for Marsellesa and 82.9 for red Caturra. Neither figure appears in the peer-reviewed Starmaya paper, which reports a range rather than a headline number — the Starmaya note lays this out in full. WCR’s own “>84 average” applies specifically to three of the four 2022 trial finalists, not to the older commercial hybrids.1 Corrected: this note previously recorded that no Cup of Excellence or Best of Panama placement for any identified F1 hybrid lot had been located. Two Cup of Excellence Nicaragua placements have since been confirmed against ACE’s official results and are set out under The competition record above67 — but note that they are lot scores for one farm’s coffee, which is a different kind of number from a variety rating. As always, a variety rating is a ceiling for the plant, not a score for a bag — see Coffee scoring and Cupping. No Best of Panama placement for an F1 hybrid was found.
