Starmaya

Starmaya is a first-generation (F1) hybrid coffee variety bred by CIRADECOM in Nicaragua. Its parents are a pollen-less Ethiopian plant called CIR-SM01 and the rust-resistant Sarchimor Marsellesa.12

Its importance is not really in the cup. It is in how you get the tree. Starmaya is, in World Coffee Research’s words, “the only F1 hybrid in the world that professional seed producers can propagate by seed, rather than through costly biotechnology.”2

The problem Starmaya solved

An F1 hybrid is the first generation of a cross between two very different parents. In coffee, that first generation is unusually strong — it out-yields and often out-cups both parents. But hybrid seed does not breed true: plant the seed of an F1 tree and the offspring scatter back into a mess of different types. So the only way to multiply a coffee hybrid reliably was cloning — growing each plant individually in a laboratory from a fragment of tissue. That is expensive enough to put the world’s best-performing coffee trees out of reach of ordinary farms. See CIRAD for how that laboratory was industrialised.

The way around it is a plant that cannot pollinate itself. In 2001, CIRAD researchers screening Ethiopian accessions at the CATIE germplasm bank in Costa Rica found a tall natural mutant that produced no pollen at all. They named it CIR-SM01. Its sterility is described as complete and stable regardless of growing conditions.1

Plant CIR-SM01 in a block surrounded by Marsellesa, and the arithmetic does the work for you: the sterile plant has no pollen of its own, so every cherry it sets must have been fertilised by Marsellesa. Every seed it drops is an F1 hybrid. No laboratory, no hand-pollination, no cutting the anthers out of flowers one at a time. That block is called a seed garden, and its output is Starmaya.13

Note which parent is which: CIR-SM01 is the seed-bearing mother; Marsellesa is the pollen donor — the father.13

To verify — this wiki said the opposite in two places

The Marsellesa and CIRAD notes here previously described Marsellesa as the “mother plant” of Starmaya, and placed the discovery of the male-sterile plant at La Cumplida farm in Nicaragua. Both are corrected above on the strength of the peer-reviewed paper1 and CIRAD’s own release3, and independently on the same points by Perfect Daily Grind4: the mutant was found at the CATIE bank in Costa Rica in 2001, and La Cumplida is where the seed garden was planted in 2009, eight years later and in a different country. The two older notes have been amended to match.

The seed garden at La Cumplida

The experimental seed garden was established in 2009 at La Cumplida farm in Nicaragua, at 950 m above sea level.1

CIRAD independently gives the same figure of roughly 500,000 seeds per hectare, and states the seed costs about half as much as the in-vitro plantlets that were the previous option.3 Its commercial partner Sustainable Management Services, ECOM’s seed-production arm in Nicaragua, planned to market one tonne of seed.3

That is the whole story in one number: half a hectare of trees, producing enough seed each year to plant out a great many farms, replacing a bioreactor.

Set that beside its Marsellesa parent and the child beats the parent on almost every line: highly resistant to rust instead of intermediate, resistant to nematodes instead of susceptible, medium fertiliser need instead of high, large beans instead of average, very good in the cup instead of good.25 That is hybrid vigour doing exactly what breeders hope it will do.

The catalogue does not state a release year for Starmaya — the country line reads Nicaragua, and the release is described only as following successful field trials.2 Commercial seed sales date from CIRAD’s December 2019 announcement.3

What the trials found

Starmaya was tested across seven environments in Nicaragua over five years, 2013–2018.1

  • Yield: 30% more than Marsellesa across the multi-site trials, and 35% more under commercial conditions.1 CIRAD’s own release frames the gain differently — 20–40% higher productivity than commercial Arabica varieties generally.3
  • Vigour: tree volume about 51% larger than the controls (0.89 m³ against 0.59 m³).1
  • Rust: 8% of Starmaya plants showed susceptibility to Coffee leaf rust, against 1% of Marsellesa.1 So “highly resistant” is a population-level rating, not a guarantee for every tree.
  • Uniformity: 16% of Starmaya plants in the field were off-types — visibly different from the rest — against 3% for Marsellesa.1 World Coffee Research quotes roughly the same figure, about 15% segregation.2

That last number is the honest cost of the method. A seed garden is cheap, but it does not produce the perfectly uniform stand a laboratory clone would. Roughly one tree in six is not quite the variety on the label.

What it tastes like

The catalogue rating is “very good” quality potential at high altitude, with “notably high acidity in the cup.”2

The trial data behind that: Starmaya was rated better than red Caturra — the standard comparison tree in Central America — and scored at or above 80 points on Specialty Coffee Association scoring, rising to above 83 at the highest altitudes tested.1 Eighty is the threshold for “specialty,” so this is a variety that clears the bar rather than one that rewrites the record books. Compare Geisha, which is what the top of the scale looks like.

To verify — the 82.5 figure

Wikipedia’s Starmaya article states the variety “scored 82.5” in cupping.6 No such single figure appears in the underlying paper, which reports a range (≥80, >83 at the highest altitude) across seven trial sites and five years rather than one headline number.1 Treat 82.5 as one summarised value of unclear provenance, not a published score. As always, a variety rating is a ceiling for the variety, not a score for any bag of coffee — see Coffee scoring and Cupping.

Can a farmer save the seed?

No. Starmaya seed comes from a seed garden, not from a Starmaya tree. Because Starmaya is itself an F1 hybrid, its own seed segregates — the next generation scatters into different types and loses the traits that made the parent worth planting.12 Growers have to go back to a seed producer each time. The breakthrough lowered the cost of hybrid planting material; it did not make hybrids self-renewing.

To verify — is Starmaya itself male-sterile?

Wikipedia states that Starmaya is not male-sterile, because the sterility trait is recessive — it needs two copies to show, and Starmaya only inherits one.6 This is genetically plausible and consistent with the seed garden design, but it was not confirmed in the CIRAD release3 or the catalogue record2 read here.

Where it grows, and how high

The variety record places Starmaya in Nicaragua and rates its optimal altitude as “medium” in all three latitude bands, without numbers.2 The trial seed garden sat at 950 m.1 Cup quality improved with altitude in the trials.1

To verify — the "1,300 m" figure and the plant description

Three claims from the research report behind this note rest on single secondary pages, none of them fetched or corroborated here:

  • An SEO agronomy page states Starmaya performs best at around 1,300 m in healthy soil, and is well suited to agroforestry (growing coffee under diversified shade).7 World Coffee Research gives no such number.2
  • A producer-facing video states that under balanced nutrition yields are believed to reach 60–80 quintales oro per hectare. The source itself hedges it (“se cree que…”), so it is an estimate, not a trial result.8
  • A blog summarising WCR material describes large bean size — which the catalogue does confirm2 — but also “dark-brown leaves,” which conflicts with the catalogue’s leaf tip colour of green.92 Do not repeat the leaf description.

Competitions, buyers and prices

There aren’t any to report.

To verify — no lot-level record found

No Cup of Excellence, Best of Panama or other competition placement, auction price, named green buyer or farm-gate price for an identified Starmaya lot was found in any source consulted for this note, and the research report behind it reached the same conclusion after searching Alliance for Coffee Excellence and comparable results archives. Roasters do sell coffee labelled Starmaya, but those listings are marketing copy, not verifiable contract or competition data. Likewise, nothing was established here about plant variety rights, licensing or current global availability of Starmaya seed beyond ECOM’s Nicaraguan seed operation.3

Why it matters

The modern breeding story is an attempt to escape a bad trade: heirlooms like Typica and Bourbon taste wonderful and die of Coffee leaf rust; the Catimor workhorses survive and cup flat. F1 hybrids are the way out — resistant, productive and good in the cup at the same time. The catch was never the genetics. It was the price of a plant.

Starmaya’s contribution is to move hybrid coffee from a laboratory product to an agricultural one. A pollen-less tree found in a Costa Rican collection in 2001, planted in a half-hectare block in Nicaragua eight years later, turned a cloning problem into a seed-sack problem. The trade-off is that one tree in six comes out off-type — which is what “cheap” costs.
