Innovea Global Breeding Network
Innovea — full name the Innovea Global Coffee Breeding Network — is an international coffee breeding programme run by World Coffee Research (WCR), in which the coffee research institutes of eleven countries breed and test the same experimental coffee plants at the same time, then share what they learn.1 WCR calls it “the largest and most ambitious collaborative coffee breeding network in the world.”1
The idea is simple and the reason for it is arithmetic. Breeding a coffee tree is slow: you cross two plants, wait years for the seedlings to bear fruit, judge them, cross again. A single national institute working alone — Cenicafé in Colombia, ICAFE in Costa Rica, KALRO in Kenya — does that on its own hillsides, on its own budget, and takes decades. Innovea gives all of them the same starting material and splits the waiting between them, so each country gets a picture of how those plants behave in eleven different climates instead of one.
It is a research programme, not a variety and not a coffee you can buy. Nothing from Innovea is in a bag on a shelf, and no lot has ever been auctioned or scored under its name — see what it has not produced below.
Who is in it
WCR’s own programme page lists eleven participating countries — Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Rwanda, Uganda, the United States, Vietnam and Ghana — which together produce over 40% of the global coffee supply.1 Each country takes part through a national research body:

Every one of these is a government-affiliated or public research institution rather than a company — the same pre-competitive model WCR is built on, where the industry funds work that nobody would gain by keeping to themselves.1 India’s CCRI is the research arm of the Coffee Board of India; Vietnam’s WASI sits in the Central Highlands, the heart of the Vietnamese robusta belt.
How it works
Innovea’s promise is a new set of diverse breeding populations every six years.1 In plain terms: WCR makes the crosses centrally, ships the seed out to every partner, and each institute plants the identical set. Because the same trees are growing in Rwanda and Peru and Kerala simultaneously, a plant that only performs in one climate is exposed quickly, and a plant that performs everywhere is worth pushing forward.
WCR’s own account of the field trials records when each site went into the ground:2

WCR describes 5,000 trees in total planted and monitored across the network, with performance and genetic data collected and aggregated over the following six years before any variety is put forward for release.2 Two further partner-country sites were due to be planted later in 2025.2
Arabica and robusta
Innovea began as an arabica programme and has since expanded to cover both arabica and robusta — Coffea canephora, the second commercial species.1 That matters more than it sounds. Robusta is roughly two-fifths of world production and has had far less formal breeding attention than arabica, while being the species buyers are turning to as warming pushes arabica uphill; see Arabica vs Robusta and Robusta. Adding it means the network is now working on the plant most of the world’s coffee will actually be, not just the plant specialty prefers.
Why it exists
The problem is the one described on Climate change and coffee: the growing areas suited to arabica are shrinking, and the trees planted in them descend from a very small founding population, which makes the whole crop vulnerable to a single disease like Coffee leaf rust. Breeding is the organised response, and Innovea’s specific contribution is speed — running one breeding cycle in parallel across three continents rather than in series in one country.
TIME magazine, naming Innovea one of its Best Inventions of 2025, framed the payoff in years: WCR expects varieties from the network to reach farmers by 2037, faster than a conventional national programme could manage.3 WCR was founded in 2012 and formed Innovea in 2022; its chief executive Vern Long is quoted describing the network as creating the best genetics by working together.3
What Innovea has not produced yet
Worth stating flatly, because this wiki is full of scores and auction prices: no Innovea plant has a competition record, a cupping score, an auction price or a named buyer. The research behind this note found nothing tying Innovea material to Cup of Excellence, Best of Panama, any green coffee auction, or any published cupping result — and that is exactly what you would expect of trees planted in 2024 with six years of data collection ahead of them.123
The same is true of the details a buyer would ask about. No elevation figures are published for the individual trial sites, and no processing method is attached to anything grown on them. A breeding trial’s output is data, not lots.
To verify — nine countries or eleven?
The counts in circulation do not match, and they are probably measuring different things. WCR’s Innovea programme page lists eleven countries.1 WCR’s own 2025 trials article says “9 partner countries”,2 and TIME says nine countries are conducting trials.3 The likely explanation is that Vietnam and Ghana joined after the first nine and have not yet planted — a trade report says exactly that, but it could not be read at source here (the page returned HTTP 403).4 The World Coffee Research note on this wiki separately records “11 countries representing 40% of world coffee exports” from WCR’s homepage, against the programme page’s “over 40% of the global coffee supply” — exports and supply are not the same measure. Do not merge these figures.
To verify — the founding announcement date
TIME states the network was formed in 2022,3 and that is treated as fact here. The more specific claim that WCR announced Innovea on 10 November comes from a single trade magazine article whose year is not visible in the available snippet, and the site refused the connection when checked here.5 Treat the day and month as unconfirmed.
To verify — 2028, 2037, and where the seeds went first
Two different end-dates are in play. A WCR video presentation is reported as saying the first seeds shipped to partner countries in February 2023, that field testing of the initial populations runs six years through 2028, and that second-cycle populations follow from 2028 onward; the video also gives 11 test sites across 10 countries, a third count again.6 That video was not viewed for this note — the figures come from the research report behind it. TIME’s 2037 is a different milestone, varieties actually reaching farmers, not populations becoming available.3 The six-year cycle itself is confirmed on WCR’s own pages.12
To verify — trial-design details, and the 2025 network meeting
WCR’s trials article describes “5,000 in total” trees across the network but publishes no per-site breakdown, no number of crosses and no parent lines; it also says six nations had installed trials while listing seven.2 Separately, WCR is reported to have scheduled an Innovea network meeting at Cenicafé headquarters in Manizales, Colombia, 17–21 November 2025 — the WCR page for that meeting returned HTTP 404 when checked here, so the meeting is plausible but unconfirmed, and note that Colombia is not on the eleven-country partner list.7
