Ruiru 11

Ruiru 11 is the plant Kenya built after a disease nearly took its coffee industry away. It is short, it crops fast, it shrugs off the two fungal diseases that flatten Kenyan farms, and it produces a great deal of coffee per hectare. It is also the variety that specialty buyers step around on the way to SL28.

The name is a place, not a code. Ruiru is the town northeast of Nairobi where Kenya’s coffee research station sits; 11 is the selection number. The station released it in 1985.123

Everything about it is a response to one event.

The disease that caused it

In 1968, an outbreak of coffee berry disease — a fungal rot, Colletotrichum kahawae, that blackens the fruit while it is still hanging on the branch — destroyed roughly half of Kenya’s coffee production. That figure appears in World Coffee Research’s own record for the variety and independently in trade reporting.123

Farmers could fight it with fungicide, but spraying a hillside repeatedly every season is expensive and never finishes. So through the 1970s the Coffee Research Foundation at Ruiru — the body that is now the Coffee Research Institute inside KALRO, Kenya’s national agricultural research organisation — worked on the other answer: build a tree that does not catch it.12

Ruiru 11 is that tree, and the brief was wider than disease alone. It was also meant to be small, so farms could plant more of it in the same ground, and quick, so replanting did not cost a grower four years of income.1

Where it came from

From the World Coffee Research variety record, which is the specialty industry’s reference catalogue:1

Ruiru 11 is a composite F1 hybrid — meaning it is the first generation of a deliberate cross, made fresh each time rather than inherited down the seed line. Its two sides are:

  • Female parent: Catimor — the Caturra × Timor Hybrid family bred for rust resistance and a compact frame. This is where the dwarf stature and the introgressed disease genes come in. (“Introgressed” means DNA from another species — Robusta, Coffea canephora — has been bred into Coffea arabica.)
  • Male parent: a multicross selection involving K7, SL28, N39 and Rume Sudan, among others. This is the quality side and the Kenyan side — SL28 is in there specifically because nobody could match its flavour any other way.

That structure is the whole design in one sentence: disease resistance from the Catimor side, cup quality and local adaptation from the Kenyan side. It is the same bargain described on the Catimor and Timor Hybrid notes, made with more care and more parents than usual.

To verify

Sources give different parent lists, and one conflicts with an existing note here. World Coffee Research names K7, SL28, N39 and Rume Sudan on the male side and then says “among others” — an explicit admission that the list is partial.1 Perfect Daily Grind gives the same four.2 A guide-tier source extends the list to include Hibrido de Timor, SL4, SL34 and Bourbon alongside them.3 The longer list is plausible — a “multicross” by definition has many parents — but it is single-sourced and should not be stated as the pedigree.

Separately, this wiki’s Timor Hybrid note carries a table row reading “HdT × Rume Sudan → Ruiru.” That is too simple to be right: WCR puts the Timor Hybrid genes on the Catimor side (Catimor already contains HdT), with Rume Sudan sitting in the other parent entirely. Both statements involve the same plants, but they describe different crosses. Treat the Timor Hybrid note’s row as a compressed summary, not a pedigree.

What the plant is like

Four things in that table are worth pulling out.

The disease ratings are the best in Kenyan coffee. “Highly resistant” to rust and “resistant” to coffee berry disease is precisely the combination SL28 and SL34 lack — both are susceptible to both. That is not a marginal agronomic preference; it is the difference between spraying a farm and not spraying it.

Year two. A grower replanting a block gets a crop in the second year rather than the fourth. Perfect Daily Grind reports the same: a first harvest “within two years of planting.”2 For a smallholder with no cash buffer, that timeline is often the deciding argument.

The leaf tip is not a field test. WCR records Ruiru 11’s new growth as green or bronze — both. The SL28 note explains at length that green-versus-bronze leaf tips are the conventional way to tell SL28 from SL34 on a Kenyan farm. A tree that can be either colour breaks that test outright on any farm that has planted Ruiru 11 — which, in Kenya, is a great many of them.

The density figure is lower than you would expect. A dwarf tree usually means dense planting: Catimor lines are typically put in at 5,000–6,000 plants a hectare. Ruiru 11 sits at 2,000–3,000 — but under multiple-stem pruning, where each tree carries several producing stems instead of one. The productivity comes from stems, not from tree count.

To verify

Water and drought. Perfect Daily Grind reports that Ruiru 11 “needs a lot of water” and is vulnerable to drought stress — a real weakness in a warming Kenya, and a direct reversal of SL28’s famous drought hardiness.2 World Coffee Research gives Ruiru 11 no drought rating at all, so this rests on one trade source quoting growers. To verify

The resistance is not reported as absolute in the field. The same article notes that some Kenyan farmers have seen unexpected cases of coffee berry disease and coffee leaf rust on Ruiru 11 despite its ratings.2 No trial, count or region is given, so this is grower report rather than data. It is worth recording anyway, because this wiki’s Catimor note documents the same pattern reaching its conclusion elsewhere: Costa Rica 95 and Lempira were both bred for rust resistance and have both since been confirmed susceptible in their own countries. Rust adapts. Nothing here says Ruiru 11 has lost its resistance — only that a rating from 1985 is not a permanent guarantee.

The seed problem

This is the part that makes Ruiru 11 unusual, and it follows directly from being an F1 hybrid.

A farmer growing SL28 can keep seed from their own trees and get SL28 back. A farmer growing Ruiru 11 cannot — the offspring of a first-generation hybrid scatter back into their parents’ traits and do not reproduce the plant. Every Ruiru 11 seed therefore has to be made at the research station, and Perfect Daily Grind reports that certified Ruiru 11 seed must be sourced from the Coffee Research Foundation, where supply has not been able to meet demand.2

The practical workaround is top-working: cutting back an existing tree and grafting Ruiru 11 (or Batian) onto the established root system, so a farm converts its trees rather than replanting them. One Kenyan grower quoted by Perfect Daily Grind says “more than half of our Ruiru 11 plants were cultivated using top-working.”2

So the variety that was supposed to rescue Kenyan smallholders is one they structurally cannot propagate themselves. Whatever else Ruiru 11 is, it is a permanent dependency on a state research institute — which is either a quality guarantee or a bottleneck, depending on whether the seed arrives.

To verify

The mechanism behind the seed shortage is described in only one source. A guide-tier page states that because Ruiru 11’s “seed does not breed true,” each generation has to be produced by manual hand-pollination — expensive and labour-intensive.3 That is exactly how composite F1 hybrids are normally maintained, and it fits both WCR’s “F1 hybrid” classification1 and Perfect Daily Grind’s report of constrained certified-seed supply.2 But no KALRO or Coffee Research Institute document describing the actual seed-production protocol was located here. Treat hand-pollination as the likely mechanism, not a documented one.

What it tastes like

World Coffee Research’s verdict at high altitude is one word: “Good.”1

That word is doing a lot of work. “Good” is a real rating — it is what Caturra gets, and it is well above the “Low” and “Very low” that most of the older Catimor family sits at. Ruiru 11 is not a bad-tasting coffee, and it is emphatically not the flat introgressed hybrid its family reputation implies.

But this wiki’s SL28 note records WCR rating that variety “Exceptional” — the top band — and SL34 the same. Kenya’s own Batian, released in 2010, rates “Very good.” Ruiru 11 is the lowest-cupping of the four varieties a Kenyan farm is likely to be growing, and it is the one with the best agronomy. That single sentence is the entire tension in modern Kenyan coffee, and it is why forty-year-old SL28 blocks are still standing on farms that could have replanted long ago.

Kenyan Ruiru 11 is conventionally washed, like the rest of the national crop — there is no processing method inherent to the variety.456

To verify

The “gap is narrowing” claim, and the counter-claim that there is no gap. A guide-tier source writes that Ruiru 11 was historically criticised as “flatter and less complex” than the SL varieties but that “generations of selection have narrowed the gap,” giving it “good cup-quality potential when grown at high altitude.”3 The altitude qualifier matches WCR’s own rating structure, but the narrowing-gap claim is single-sourced and no comparative cupping data is offered.

Pushing the other way, a Kenyan producer quoted by Perfect Daily Grind says “few consumers would be able to taste the difference between Ruiru 11 and SL varieties.”2 That is one grower’s opinion, not a blind panel — but it is a useful corrective to a reputation largely maintained by people who have never cupped the two side by side. How it actually reaches buyers

Almost always blended into a grade, not sold as a variety. Three separate merchant listings show the pattern:

  • Rukira Factory, Nyeri, owned by the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society — fully washed, Ruiru 11 with SL28 and SL34 together, at 1,800 m.4
  • A Meru lot — washed, SL28 and Ruiru 11, 2024 harvest.6
  • An isolated Ruiru 11 lot from Meru — washed, sold specifically as a single-variety separation.5

The third one is the exception that proves the rule: isolating Ruiru 11 is unusual enough to be a selling point. Normally the varieties go through the wet mill mixed, get catalogued by screen size rather than by plant, and reach a buyer as “Kenya AA.” As the Nairobi Coffee Exchange note puts it, variety-level Kenyan auction records essentially do not exist — the paperwork records the size of the bean.

To verify

No competition result, auction price, buyer or cupping score for Ruiru 11 was found. Not one, in any source consulted. There is a structural reason as well as a research one: Kenya has no Cup of Excellence programme, and the Nairobi Coffee Exchange catalogues by grade rather than variety, so the documents that would carry a variety-level score or price mostly do not exist. The altitude figures in the merchant listings above (1,800 m; 1,500 m; 1,700–2,100 m) are seller-stated and unaudited,456 and the Kenya note already warns against quoting precise elevations for named Kenyan factories.

Likewise, the claim that Ruiru 11 “quickly became one of the most widely planted varieties in the country”3 is single-sourced and unquantified. No Kenyan planted-area breakdown by variety was located — the same gap the Kenya note flags for the SL varieties. “Widely planted” is the safe statement; any percentage is not.

Why it matters

Ruiru 11 is what happens when a coffee industry has to choose between surviving and being famous.

The plant works. It resists the disease that halved a national crop, it yields very high, it crops in year two, it fits more coffee onto less land, and it cups “Good” — which, measured against the Catimor family it descends from, is a genuine breeding achievement rather than a consolation prize. Kenya asked for a tree that would keep farms in business and got one.

What it did not do is end the argument. Buyers still fly to Kenya for SL28, the susceptible, low-yielding, drought-hardy tree that catches everything and tastes like blackcurrant. So Kenyan farms hedge: SL blocks for the buyers, Ruiru 11 for the yield, everything harvested together and sold as a grade. That is why a bag labelled “Kenya AA” so often contains all of them at once — and why the country’s most-planted modern variety is one most drinkers have never knowingly tasted.

  • Kenya — the origin it was bred for and is almost entirely confined to
  • SL28 · SL34 — the heirlooms it was built to replace, and the reason it never quite did
  • Batian — Kenya’s 2010 release, tall where Ruiru 11 is dwarf and rated “Very good” in the cup; also used as rootstock for top-working
  • KALRO — the state research body, formerly the Coffee Research Foundation, that bred it and still supplies its seed
  • Catimor — the female parent’s family, and where the disease resistance comes from
  • Timor Hybrid — the Arabica × Robusta ancestor behind that resistance
  • Caturra · Robusta — the plants further back on the Catimor side
  • Sarchimor · Castillo — the parallel disease-resistance programmes in other countries
