Bourbon-Typica group
Open almost any variety page in the World Coffee Research catalogue — Caturra, Catuaí, Mundo Novo, Villa Sarchi, SL28, SL34 — and one line repeats: “Bourbon-Typica group.” This note explains what that label means and why it sits under so much of the coffee world.
The short version: two small batches of seed left Yemen in the early 1700s and travelled in opposite directions. One went east and then to a Dutch greenhouse, and became Typica. One went to a French island in the Indian Ocean, and became Bourbon. Nearly everything grown commercially outside Ethiopia descends from those two departures, or from a cross between them.
Two bases, not a parent and a child
The peer-reviewed genetics is unusually clear on this point. The AFLP and SSR marker study by Anthony and colleagues describes “the genetic bases of coffee (i.e. Typica and Bourbon) spread from Yemen since the early 18th century that have given rise to most arabica cultivars grown world-wide,” and found that accessions descended from those two dispersals “were grouped separately, according to their genetic origin.”1
Two things follow from that, and both cut against how the story is usually told:
- Bourbon is not a mutation of Typica. They are sibling dispersals from the same Yemeni stock, not parent and offspring. Popular coffee writing says otherwise constantly; the Bourbon note flags it, and the genetics here is the reason.
- The Yemeni cultivars themselves sit on the Typica side. The same study reports that “the Yemen cultivars were classified with the Typica-derived accessions.”1 Yemen is the shared source, but what survives there today tests closer to one branch than the other.
World Coffee Research uses the group name as a taxonomic bucket with a qualifier attached. Its Bourbon record reads “Bourbon-Typica group (Bourbon related)”; SL34’s reads “(Typica related)”; crosses that draw on both sides, like Mundo Novo and Catuaí, get the plain group name with no qualifier.23
How narrow the base actually is
World Coffee Research states it plainly: “A small number of coffee trees taken out of Yemen beginning in the late 17th century form the basis of most worldwide arabica coffee production today,” contributing to “a significant genetic bottleneck for C. arabica.”4
The one hard number on the page is Brazilian. Brazil accounts for 40% of world production, and 97.55% of Brazilian coffee cultivars are derived from Typica and Bourbon.4 For the single largest producing country, the founding pair is effectively the entire crop.
That is what a bottleneck means in practice, and it is the same thread running through Ethiopia’s note: a forest holding thousands of genetically distinct Arabica types sent a handful of seeds abroad, and those seeds became the world’s plantations. It is also why Coffee leaf rust is a systemic threat rather than a local one — a family this uniform gets sick uniformly — and why breeders keep going back to Ethiopian material and to interspecies crosses like the Timor Hybrid.

A widely repeated figure puts the Typica/Bourbon share of global Arabica production at 70–80%. The only source found for it is a cultivar-profile blog, and World Coffee Research’s own page gives no global percentage — only the Brazilian 97.55%.5 Treat the global figure as a plausible estimate, not a measurement.

The number of original trees is not documented anywhere primary. One secondary profile suggests “possibly as few as one or two individual trees” behind the Typica base, reasoning backwards from how genetically uniform the descendants are.5 That is an inference from genetic uniformity, not a historical count. World Coffee Research says only “a small number.”4
The two routes out of Yemen
Dates below are as given by World Coffee Research’s history of Arabica unless noted.4

Two details in that table do most of the explanatory work. First, 1706: a single plant. A large share of the world’s coffee descends from one specimen in a European greenhouse. Second, the two routes stayed apart for roughly 150 years — Bourbon sat isolated on an Indian Ocean island while Typica colonised the Americas — which is exactly why they read as separate genetic groups today rather than as one blurred population.
The Brazilian arrival of Typica in 1727 is the one the country tells stories about: an army officer named Francisco de Melo Palheta, sent to French Guiana ostensibly over a border dispute, who by legend came home with seeds hidden in a bouquet. That account is covered in the Brazil note.

One coffee-education source dates Bourbon’s arrival in Brazil to a government import in 1859, citing Carvalho et al. (1989), and attributes the decision to Bourbon’s higher yield from shorter internodes.6 World Coffee Research says “around 1860” without naming a mechanism.2 The two are close enough to be the same event, but the precise year and the government-import framing rest on a single secondary source.

DNA fingerprinting is said to link the historic Indian cultivars Coorg and Kent to Bourbon-derived material.7 This appears in one search-optimised source with no corroborating study found, and neither cultivar has a World Coffee Research entry cited for it. Treat as unconfirmed.
What the group gave the world — and what it cost
Everything the family is famous for comes as a matched pair of traits.
On the credit side, cup quality. World Coffee Research rates both founders “Very Good” at high altitude, and the descendants that specialty buyers chase — Caturra, Pacas, Villa Sarchi, SL28, Pacamara — inherited it.23
On the debit side, fragility. Both founders are susceptible to Coffee leaf rust, to nematodes, and to coffee berry disease, and so is essentially every descendant that wasn’t deliberately crossed with something else.23 When rust epidemics swept Central America from roughly 2008 onward, what got pulled out of the ground was overwhelmingly this family.
The industry’s response was to breed out of the group. The Catimor and Sarchimor families exist because breeders crossed Bourbon-derived dwarfs with the Timor Hybrid — a natural Arabica × Robusta cross found on Timor — to import rust resistance the Bourbon-Typica group simply does not contain. Every rust-resistant variety on a modern Central American farm is, in effect, an admission of how narrow this gene pool is.
Reading the label on a variety page
A quick guide to what you’ll see in the catalogue, and one trap:
- “Bourbon-Typica group (Bourbon related)” — genetic testing puts it on the Bourbon branch. Bourbon, Caturra, Pacas, Villa Sarchi, SL28.
- “Bourbon-Typica group (Typica related)” — the Typica branch. Typica, SL34, SL14.
- “Bourbon-Typica group” with no qualifier — usually a cross drawing on both, like Mundo Novo (Typica × Bourbon) or Catuaí.
- The trap: the label reflects genetics, not paperwork. SL34 was selected in Kenya from a population recorded as “French Mission” — that is, Bourbon — but tests as Typica-related, and World Coffee Research says the historical record “could be incorrect.” Its stablemate SL28 does still test as Bourbon-related. The two are named in one breath constantly; they sit on opposite branches.
Varieties that fall outside the group are worth knowing for contrast: Geisha traces to Ethiopian collections rather than the Yemeni dispersals, and the rust-resistant Catimor and Sarchimor lines carry Robusta genes through the Timor Hybrid. Those are the exceptions that make the group’s dominance visible.
