Peterson family

The Petersons are the Swedish-American family who own and run Hacienda La Esmeralda in Boquete, Panama — the farm that made Geisha world-famous and holds many of the highest coffee prices ever recorded. Three generations turned a cattle ranch into the most influential single estate in modern specialty coffee.

Three generations

Rudolph A. Peterson — the patriarch. A Swedish-American banker who became president of Bank of America, he bought Esmeralda in 1967 as a retirement venture, when the land was mostly beef-cattle pasture with only scattered coffee. He soon took a role at the United Nations, which kept him away from Panama in the early years (Proud Mary, accessed 2026-07-22).

Price Peterson — the son who made coffee matter. He took over management in the early 1970s when his father joined the UN, switched the herds to dairy by 1975, and from the mid-1980s began pursuing coffee as a serious crop — a bet that led to the 1997 purchase of the high-altitude Jaramillo plot where the estate’s Geisha would later thrive. Rachel, Daniel, and Ricardo Peterson — the grandchildren who run it today. Daily operations have passed to Price and Susan’s children (Proud Mary, accessed 2026-07-22). Daniel is credited with the meticulous lot-separation-by-plot that isolated the Geisha’s flavor. Rachel leads marketing, education, and community projects. Ricardo works in farm operations.

Why they matter

In 2004 the family entered a separated Geisha lot from Jaramillo into Best of Panama. Its jasmine-and-bergamot cup stunned the judges and sold for a then-record $21 per pound — the moment that created today’s ultra-premium coffee market (Clarity Coffee, accessed 2026-07-22).
