Jimma Agricultural Research Center
The Jimma Agricultural Research Center — JARC — is the government laboratory that gave Ethiopian coffee its numbers.
If you have ever bought an Ethiopian bag labelled 74158 instead of the usual vague “heirloom,” this is where that label came from. JARC went into the forests in the 1970s, dug up plants, gave each one a filing number, and propagated the ones that survived disease and produced a crop. Half a century later those filing numbers hold the highest price ever paid at a Cup of Excellence auction.12
It is a research station, not a farm and not an exporter. You cannot buy JARC coffee. No auction result, cupping certificate or export lot carries its name — and that is the normal shape of things for a breeding institute, exactly as it is for Cenicafé in Colombia or IAC in Brazil. The seed leaves the station and turns up on a score sheet years later under a smallholder’s name.
What it is, plainly
JARC is a research centre of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), the federal body that runs Ethiopia’s national agricultural research system.12 EIAR operates around twenty centres, each holding the national coordinating mandate for a different crop; JARC holds coffee.32
It was established in 1967, under EIAR’s predecessor the Institute of Agricultural Research — the organisation created in 1966 to give Ethiopia its first nationally coordinated research system.432 Its founding brief was to coordinate, generate and disseminate coffee research for Ethiopian farmers, and its work spans breeding, agronomy, cup quality, diseases and pests, soils and conservation, and the economics of growing.2 Within EIAR it is formally designated the Center of Excellence for Coffee Research.1
Coffee is the headline but not the whole job. JARC also coordinates national research on tea, on soil fertility and crop production, and on watershed management.1
The centre sits near the city of Jimma, in the Jimma Zone of Oromia in southwestern Ethiopia — a wet, forested highland region several hundred kilometres from the Sidama highlands where its varieties now win competitions. Older papers call it Jima, or Jimma–Melko after the site itself.564

The station’s physical profile could not be read at source. EIAR’s own page for the Jimma centre is the origin of everything in this paragraph, and
eiar.gov.etrefused the connection to every attempt made for this note — the same failure recorded on the JARC 74158 page. As reported second-hand, that page gives: 365 km from Addis Ababa, coordinates 7°46′ N, 36° E, an altitude of 1,753 metres, a total area of 183 hectares, an agro-ecology described as “sub humid tepid to cool mid highlands,” temperatures of 9–28 °C, mean annual rainfall of 1,561 mm, a growing season of 4–7 months, and soils that are Chromic Nitisol and Cambisol on the upland with Fluvisol in the bottom land. The same page is the sole source for the sub-centres Gera and Haru, the testing sites Metu, Mugi and Agro, and the postal address (P.O. Box 192, Jimma).17 None of it is contradicted anywhere; none of it was confirmed here.
The gene bank: why Ethiopia can label a plant at all
This is the part that matters to anyone drinking the coffee.
Almost all Ethiopian coffee is sold as “heirloom” — trade shorthand meaning a mixture of wild local types that nobody has ever catalogued. See Yirgacheffe, where that is still the norm. Ethiopia is arabica’s birthplace, so its forests hold more coffee genetic variation than the rest of the world put together, and for most of history none of it was written down.
JARC is the organisation that started writing it down. From around 1970 it ran a long-term national collection programme, sending teams into every coffee-growing area to gather landraces — locally adapted wild and semi-wild populations — and plant them out in field gene banks: living archives where each collected plant is grown in a labelled row so it can be measured, compared and crossed rather than sitting frozen as a seed.54
That archive is the reason a bag can say 74158 at all. The number is a catalogue entry.
To verify
How big the collection is, and how many sites hold it. A CIRAD conference poster states that as of July 2006 JARC conserved and evaluated 4,731 distinct accessions across field gene banks at Jimma–Melko and nine sub-centres.5 The PDF could not be parsed here, and two things sit awkwardly with it: EIAR’s own centre page names only two sub-centres, Gera and Haru (plus three testing sites),1 and a commercial source cited on the JARC 74158 note claims JARC keeps “over 450 accessions catalogued since 1970” — an order of magnitude lower. The likely reading is that “accessions” and “sub-centres” are being counted differently by each source, but no institutional register was located. Treat the collection as large and long-running, and do not quote a number.
What it has released
JARC’s breeding brief, set out at the founding, was three lines long: collect and conserve germplasm; develop cultivars combining high yield, disease resistance and good quality; multiply and supply improved seed to farmers.4
Note the order. Yield and disease came first. The disease in question is Coffee berry disease, a fungus that blackens the fruit on the branch while it is still growing and is the single biggest threat to an Ethiopian crop — and most of what JARC has released is aimed at it, in versions tuned separately for high, mid and low-altitude growing zones.64

In 2022 the entire published top eight of Ethiopia’s national Cup of Excellence was numbered JARC material.9 A country with the deepest coffee gene pool on earth wins its own competition with 1970s government selections — which is less strange than it sounds, because those selections are the gene pool, filtered.
To verify
The count of released varieties. An Ethiopian green-coffee exporter’s partner page, read directly for this note, states that JARC has released 42 coffee varieties for different regions.2 It is the only source consulted that gives a figure, no EIAR bulletin or variety register was reachable to check it, and a trading company’s partner page is not an institutional document. Plausible and widely consistent with JARC’s role — but not a verified number.
To verify
When 74158 was actually released — this wiki disagrees with itself. The JARC 74158 note records a roaster’s account that JARC approved the release in 1979, and a second source that places the same selection in a 1980s–1990s wave instead. Nothing located for this note settles it. Until a JARC or EIAR bulletin surfaces, the release year stays contested.
Where the seed actually went
JARC’s third founding objective — multiply and supply improved seed — is the one with the least documentation and arguably the most impact. Ethiopian coffee is grown overwhelmingly by smallholders on plots of a hectare or two, so a variety only exists in practice if seedlings reach tens of thousands of farms.
To verify
The one documented distribution episode. A journal article on coffee production in Limmu Awraja, southwestern Ethiopia, reports that after 1975 mixed varieties produced by the research centre at Jimma were handed out to peasant farmers there as seedlings.9 The article returned HTTP 403 to every attempt made here, so the claim is carried from the research report behind this note rather than read at source.
A separate case study on Limu coffee — one of Ethiopia’s named washed-coffee regions — states that the coffee-berry-disease-resistant cultivars grown there are “results of the Jima Agricultural Research Centre,” and describes JARC as leading coffee selection across Ethiopia and holding the national coffee research programme.6 That PDF could not be parsed here either, but it is consistent with everything above and with the geography: Limu sits in the same southwestern country as the station.
It has no competition record, and that is correct
No Cup of Excellence placement, ACE auction lot, cupping score, price or buyer is attached to JARC anywhere. The research behind this note searched auction archives and SCA and CQI records and found nothing, which is the expected result: JARC is not a producer.
What it has instead is a fingerprint on other people’s results. Basha Bekele’s 2024 record lot, the 2022 Ethiopian podium, Alo Coffee’s Echoes of the Peak sale — all reported as JARC selections, all sold under farmers’ and stations’ names. The institute appears in the variety column and nowhere else.
The same is true of every breeding institute on this wiki. Cenicafé has never won anything; Colombia’s coffee is its trees. Scott Agricultural Laboratories never entered a competition; Kenya’s reputation is SL28.
Why it matters
Three reasons, in ascending order.
It made Ethiopian coffee legible. Before JARC, an Ethiopian lot was a place and a hope. After it, a small but growing share of lots carry a specific, propagated, identifiable plant — which is the precondition for everything specialty buyers do: traceability, repeat purchasing, paying more for a known thing.
It bred for survival and got quality by accident. Nothing in the founding brief says win auctions. The plants were selected to resist disease and yield on a smallholding. The competition record arrived four decades later as a side effect, which is a useful corrective to the idea that great coffee comes from varieties bred for the cup.
It is the custodian of the crop’s genetic origin. Ethiopia’s forests hold the raw material every other coffee country’s breeding programme will eventually need — for Coffee leaf rust, for berry disease, for a warming climate. World Coffee Research and CATIE work with derived material; JARC’s field gene banks sit on the source. That makes an underfunded station near Jimma, whose website will not load, one of the more consequential addresses in coffee.
