Fine Robusta

Fine Robusta is the name for Robusta coffee that has been graded — and passed — against a quality standard written specifically for it. The standard belongs to the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), and it exists because the ordinary specialty rulebook does not fit this species.

The short version: a lot is Fine Robusta if it scores 80 points or more on CQI’s Robusta cupping form and the green beans meet strict physical rules on defects, moisture and smell. Fail either half and it is ordinary commodity Robusta, no matter how good the other half looked.

That 80-point line is deliberately the same number Arabica uses for “specialty” (see Coffee scoring). The scale is shared; the tasting form underneath it is not.

Why Robusta needed its own form

Cupping forms are built around the flavours a species actually has. Arabica’s form rewards acidity — the bright, fruity, citric quality prized in a washed Ethiopian. Robusta has very little of that, and grading it on an Arabica sheet is like judging a stout on how crisp it is: the coffee loses before it starts.

So CQI’s Robusta form swaps the categories out. The attributes scored, with their maximum points (Hello5 Coffee, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch):

Two of those categories do not exist on the Arabica sheet at all. Salt/Acid asks about the salty–sour balance a Robusta actually shows rather than about fruit acidity, and Bitter/Sweet treats bitterness — Robusta’s signature, and its reputational problem — as something to be judged on balance rather than simply penalised. The eight boxes still add to 100, which is why the resulting number can sit next to an Arabica score without needing translation.

The score bands

Robusta quality is described in three named tiers (Xì Phố Cafe, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch):

Premium is the tier that has no Arabica equivalent, and it is the interesting one. It gives a mill something to aim at — and something to sell — before it reaches specialty grade, which matters in origins where almost no lot clears 80 on the first attempt.

The green-coffee rules

A Fine Robusta score is only half the certificate. Before a lot is cupped, a physical sample is graded by eye, and this is where most Robusta is eliminated. The parameters below are the CQI/UCDA classification, as set out by Hello5 Coffee (accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch), which cites CQI’s Q Robusta – Fine Robusta Standards and Protocols, © 2019:

Reading that table: a primary defect is a serious one — a full black bean, a bean eaten through by insects, a stone or stick in the bag. Fine Robusta allows none of them in 350 grams, which is roughly a large mugful of green coffee. Secondary defects are the cosmetic ones — chips, partial discolouration, shells — and you get five. A quaker is an underripe bean that refuses to brown in the roaster and tastes of cardboard; three per 100 g roasted is the ceiling.

One procedural rule is worth knowing because it quietly favours the producer: defect counts are recorded as whole numbers, always rounded down, never up (same source). Half a defect is no defect.

To verify — the two published defect limits do not agree

The same publisher states the rule two different ways. Its classification page gives Fine Robusta as zero primary defects and no more than 5 secondary per 350 g; its explainer page instead says a “350 g green coffee sample must not have more than 5 primary defects” (both accessed 2026-07-23, both fetched). Those are not compatible — one forbids primary defects outright, the other allows five. Because both pages come from one publisher, they are one source, not two, and the wiki cannot settle which reading matches CQI’s document. Treat “zero primary defects” as the likely intended rule, since it matches how the tiers are structured elsewhere, but do not quote either number as CQI’s own without the protocol document in hand.

What “no primary defects” does to a mill

The rule is stricter than it sounds. Commodity Robusta is typically strip-picked — the whole branch pulled at once, ripe and unripe together — and dried on the ground as a natural. That method produces primary defects by design. Hitting zero means selective picking, raised beds or patios, and hand-sorting, which is the same labour bill a specialty Arabica farm carries but against a green price set by an origin-blind futures contract (see Robusta for how that contract works).

That gap — specialty costs against commodity revenue — is the reason Fine Robusta is an economic argument as much as a technical one, and the reason origin programmes rather than individual farms tend to drive it.

Origin implementations

CQI’s protocol is applied through national and project-level programmes, and the published numbers differ between them.

Uganda. The classification above is presented as a joint CQI / UCDA framework, and a second, independent Vietnamese source describes the Fine Robusta standards as developed by CQI and UCDA together, drawing on SCA Arabica grading practice and International Coffee Organization data, forming the base of CQI’s Q Robusta certification (Prime Coffee, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch). Uganda is a logical home for it: it sits inside the species’ native African range, and it is one of the top five Robusta-producing countries.

Cambodia. A Cambodian roaster documents a tighter, differently-shaped implementation (Origin Café KH, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch): a 300 g green sample rather than 350 g, a limit of 8 total defects once partial defects are converted (2–5 partials count as 1 full defect), screen 16 (6.35 mm) minimum bean size with under 5% falling below screen 15, density sorting that strips 3–7% of the mass off an unsorted lot, 11.5–12.5% moisture, and water activity of 0.65 or less to keep mould from developing in the bag. Lots that miss the defect threshold drop back to commodity regardless of how they cupped. The same source reports Cambodian Fine Robusta lots typically scoring 80–84 points, roasted to City+ (around 210–215 °C), and processed by controlled wet-hulling or fully washed methods.

To verify — the Cambodian figures may be a national calibration, not the global standard

Every number in the Cambodia paragraph comes from one commercial roaster’s blog, which presents them as CQI standards but cites no CQI document by title (accessed 2026-07-23, fetched). They also disagree with the Uganda-linked classification on two basic parameters — sample size (300 g vs 350 g) and moisture (11.5–12.5% vs 10–12%) — which is exactly what you would expect if one or both were locally calibrated. Do not state “Fine Robusta requires ≤8 defects per 300 g” or “screen 16 minimum” as the universal rule.

Where it came from

The programme is reported to have started in 2010, when CQI created the Q Robusta Program to do for Robusta what Q grading had done for Arabica, with the Fine Robusta Standards and Protocols publicly launched in 2021 at World of Coffee, the European trade show (Xì Phố Cafe, accessed 2026-07-23, confirmed via WebFetch). The classification document itself carries a © 2019 line, per the citation on the Uganda-linked page — consistent with a standard written before it was publicly launched, but not proof of it.

The people who apply it are licensed separately from Arabica graders. As this wiki’s Q Grader note records, CQI licenses a Q Robusta Grader — usually written R Grader — as its own credential, working to these standards, while Arabica grading follows SCA rules.

To verify — the dates, and the legal status

2010 and 2021 rest on a single Vietnamese coffee blog that cites no document for either. No CQI record confirming either date was read for this note. Treat both as reported, not established. The standard’s legal force is unclear. UCDA, and the Cambodian and Vietnamese programmes, are all documented as using CQI’s protocols; no source read here states whether Fine Robusta is a government regulation anywhere or purely a voluntary commercial standard, and no formal adoption date for UCDA was found.

To verify — no CQI document was read directly

Everything on this page comes from third parties citing CQI, not from CQI. The compiled standards PDF the research trail points at (Coffee Strategies) returned HTTP 403 on 2026-07-23, and the Vietnamese resource page holding the full technical document puts it behind a members’ login. This also squares with what this wiki already found: the Robusta note records that CQI’s own public pages and its Q Exam Program Guidebook v8 (2024) contain no Fine Robusta content at all — Arabica only. That does not mean the programme is fictional; the score bands and the cupping form are corroborated across independent publishers in three countries. It means no figure on this page has been checked against the protocol itself, and anyone acting commercially on these numbers should request the document from CQI.

Why it matters

Fine Robusta is the only formal route by which a Robusta lot can be priced on quality rather than on the futures market. There is no Robusta Cup of Excellence and no Robusta Best of Panama — the big competitions are Arabica affairs, a gap this wiki also notes for Liberica — so a CQI score is the entire mechanism for making a good Robusta legible to a buyer abroad.

It matters more every year for a climate reason. Robusta tolerates the heat and low altitude that Arabica is losing ground to, so the species is going to be a larger share of what the world grows whether specialty likes it or not. Fine Robusta is the bet that the species’ bad reputation is a farming-and-processing failure rather than a botanical ceiling — and the standard is the instrument that would settle the argument, one graded lot at a time.

Note the honest limitation on the record: this wiki has no verified auction price, competition result or named buyer for any Fine Robusta lot. The standard exists; a public price discovery mechanism around it does not, yet. That is the difference between Fine Robusta today and specialty Arabica.
