Coffee Collective

Coffee Collective is a Danish specialty coffee roastery and café group based in Copenhagen. Its roastery and office are at Godthåbsvej 34B, 2000 Frederiksberg, on the western edge of the city.12 It roasts light, names the farm on the bag, and sells through its own coffee bars in Copenhagen and Aarhus plus partner cafés across Europe, Asia and the United States.134

Why it belongs in this wiki: Coffee Collective is one of the founding names of what people now call Nordic-style roasting, and it was built by competition baristas rather than by coffee merchants. The trading name in company records is Coffee Collective ApS (ApS is the Danish equivalent of a limited company).2 Its working website is coffeecollective.dk; the .com address is not the company site — fetched for this note, it returns only a placeholder page reading “Get Ready! We are working on something cool.”5

Founding and the three founders

A third-party Nordic roaster guide, read directly for this note, states that Coffee Collective was established in Copenhagen in 2007 by Peter N. Dupont, Casper Engel Rasmussen and Klaus Thomsen, and describes the company as having pioneered the Nordic approach through “direct relationships at origin, transparent pricing, and a café roastery model that puts information and taste on equal footing.”1

That is one source for the founding, and it is not the company’s own filing — hence the flag below. What is independently on the record is who those three people are as competitors, which is the part this wiki can check against championship results.

To verify — founding year, founders and ownership

The 2007 date and the three founder names come from a single third-party guide.1 Coffee Collective’s own site could not be read for this note: every attempt to fetch coffeecollective.dk returned HTTP 429 (“too many requests”), including the About page, so no company-authored founder list, founding date or ownership statement was confirmed at source. The research report behind this note reaches the same conclusion and states plainly that founder names and share ownership are not verifiable from the primary sources it saw. No Danish corporate filing (CVR) was consulted. Treat the founding year and the founder list as well-attested trade knowledge rather than a documented fact, and do not describe anyone as the owner.

The first three lines are recorded in this wiki’s own championship result tables, drawn from World Coffee Events data, and match the titles the Nordic guide attributes to the founders.1 The Thomsen detail is worth stating carefully: he won the world barista title in 2006 representing Estate Coffee — a year before the roastery is said to have been founded — so the title is his, not the company’s.

The fourth line is the one case where a competitor took Coffee Collective’s name onto a world stage: Mikaela Wallgren finished second at the 2016 World Brewers Cup in Dublin for The Coffee Collective, losing to Tetsu Kasuya by 0.08 points.

Its coffee also shows up in someone else’s winning routine. The 2023 Coffee Masters champion, Jānis Podiņš, competed with a Bolivian coffee roasted by Coffee Collective — the only edition of that competition for which any competitor’s coffee is documented at all. That detail rests on a single news recap and is already flagged on the Coffee Masters note.

Cafés and bakery

Coffee Collective runs a group of its own coffee bars — the company’s site lists Trianglen, Bernikow, Carlsberg Byen, Godthåbsvej, Jægersborggade, Sankt Hans Torv and Torvehallerne in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, Guldsmedgade in Aarhus, and a Collective Bakery.3

Two of those are worth a sentence each. Jægersborggade 57, in the Nørrebro district, is independently listed as an operating Coffee Collective café and is generally taken to be the original shop.6 Torvehallerne is a coffee bar inside Copenhagen’s covered food market rather than a standalone café.3

Where else it is served

The company keeps a “Locate Us” page listing cafés and bakeries abroad that serve or retail its coffee. These are partner venues, not company-owned outlets.4

That list is a useful map of who a Copenhagen light roaster’s natural allies are: a Viennese bakery, a Tokyo omakase-style coffee counter, a cycling-clothing brand’s cafés, and London’s Prufrock Coffee — the shop Gwilym Davies opened after his own world barista title.

Sourcing and house style

The company is described as roasting light and clarity-first, working with the same producers over years, and publishing annual reports of what it pays farmers.1 Offers listed against the company at the time of writing were Reshad from Jimma in Ethiopia (a natural and a honey version), a washed Tolima Grande from Colombia, and Uluri, a natural Pacamara from Caranavi in Bolivia.1 Product offers rotate every season, so treat that as a snapshot rather than a catalogue.

Published price reporting is the part of this that matters beyond marketing. Most roasters that claim Direct trade never say what they paid; a roaster that prints the figure invites arithmetic against the C price. See the flag below for why this wiki does not yet state it as fact.

To verify — transparency reports, published prices and B Corp status

A single third-party source says Coffee Collective publishes annual transparency reports with farmer payments and is B Corp certified.1 Neither was confirmed: the company site was unreachable (HTTP 429) and no report document, price figure, or entry in the B Corp directory was retrieved for this note. No price paid to any producer is stated here for that reason.

To verify — the shop and partner lists

The lists of cafés and international partners above come from the research report’s reading of coffeecollective.dk and its Locate Us page.34 Those pages could not be re-fetched here (HTTP 429), and shop and stockist lists change without notice.
