Urnex
Urnex is an American manufacturer of cleaning and descaling products for coffee and tea equipment, founded in 1936.1 It does not grow, roast or sell coffee. It makes the powders, tablets and liquids that baristas run through machines at the end of a shift — and it is, by a wide margin, the name most likely to be printed on the tub under the counter of a specialty café.
Its own line is “Behind Every Great Cup,” which is a fair description of where the company sits: invisible in the drink, and one of the few variables in a café that nobody tastes until it goes wrong.1
What it actually makes
Urnex products are cleaning agents, not coffee — supplied in powder, tablet, liquid and capsule forms for traditional espresso machines, superautomatics, filter brewers, cold brew systems, milk systems, grinders, single-serve machines, tea brewers and roasting equipment.1
Two jobs are going on under that list, and they are chemically different:
- Cleaning removes coffee oils and residue — the brown film that builds up in group heads, brew baskets, grinder burr chambers and urns. Left alone it goes rancid, and every subsequent drink picks up a stale, bitter edge that has nothing to do with the coffee.
- Descaling removes limescale — the mineral deposit that hard water leaves inside boilers and pipes. That is a hardware problem rather than a flavour one at first: scale insulates heating elements, chokes flow, and eventually kills the machine. See Water for brewing coffee for why some water makes it much faster than others.
The company sells under several owned brand names, including Urnex, Puro, Biocaf and Full Circle, and says its products are available in more than 70 countries and that it works with more than 40 of the world’s premier equipment manufacturers.12
Where it is, and where things are made
There are two addresses attached to Urnex and they are not the same place:
| Location | |
|---|---|
| Corporate address | 705 Tri-State Parkway, Gurnee, Illinois 60031132 |
| Production facility | Elmsford, New York — where the company says products bearing the Urnex name are manufactured4 |
Urnex makes a point of producing in-house rather than outsourcing to third-party contract manufacturers, arguing this gives it tighter quality control and faster product changes, and describes more than 80 years of industry experience.4
To verify — has the headquarters moved?
This wiki’s research report states Urnex’s headquarters as 700 Executive Blvd, Elmsford, NY 10523, sourced from business-data aggregators (Explorium, Craft.co, PitchBook).5 Urnex’s own current pages give the corporate address as Gurnee, Illinois — the same address as its parent group — while still naming Elmsford as the production site.143 The most likely reading is that the corporate office moved to the parent’s Illinois campus and the aggregator listings are stale, but no announcement of a move was found, and the New York facility’s current status was not confirmed. Treat the Elmsford address as a former or manufacturing-only address.
Who owns it
The legal entity is Urnex Brands, LLC, and its own privacy policy identifies its parent as PurposeBuilt Brands — a Gurnee, Illinois cleaning-products group whose portfolio also includes Weiman, Goo Gone, Biokleen and Five Star Chemicals.32 Urnex is listed among that group’s brands.2
So the coffee industry’s default cleaning brand is, at the corporate level, one line in a broader household- and specialty-cleaning business — a fairly ordinary end point for a category-leading niche brand, and worth knowing when you read Urnex’s own marketing about coffee focus.
To verify — the ownership chain and its dates
How Urnex got from independent to PurposeBuilt is not established here. This wiki’s research report cites a Cortec Group press release dating an acquisition by a Cortec Group Fund V–led group to 16 April 2015,6 while PitchBook’s profile lists an acquisition dated 1 June 20195 — the report itself flags these as conflicting. Neither source was fetched for this note (the Cortec page returned HTTP 403), and no announcement connecting Urnex to PurposeBuilt Brands was found at all. Only the present-day parent relationship is confirmed.32 Do not state an acquisition year.
To verify — the founding story
The often-repeated origin story is that Urnex began as the Royal Urn Bag Company in Manhattan, making paper filters (“urn bags”) for coffee urns, before developing an Urn & Brewer Cleaner sold in hand-filled envelopes printed with the motto “No More Bitter Coffee.”78 None of this appears on Urnex’s current official pages read for this note, which confirm only the 1936 founding year and use the newer line “Behind Every Great Cup.”14 The story traces to the company’s LinkedIn profile and retailer/reseller pages rather than to primary documentation, so it is recorded here as a claim, not history. The 1936 date itself is confirmed by Urnex directly.1
Why a cleaning company matters to specialty coffee
Specialty coffee is built on controlling variables — grind, ratio, temperature, water — and equipment condition is one of them, just an unglamorous one. A grinder full of stale oils and a group head with a caked screen will move a drink further off target than most of the adjustments a barista makes on purpose. Cleaning is the variable you fix by schedule rather than by taste.
The company also shows up in the specialty world’s cultural machinery: it publishes brewing-education content that this wiki cites on Extraction yield and Brew ratio,9 and it runs an ambassador programme for competing baristas — Mathieu Theis’s note draws part of its competition record from his Urnex ambassador profile.10
Not a coffee producer
Stated plainly because equipment brands are easy to confuse with coffee brands: Urnex grows, mills, roasts and sells no coffee. There is no Urnex lot, no cupping score, no altitude, no processing method and no auction price attached to the name — only cleaning chemistry. It belongs on this wiki for the same reason La Marzocco, Hario and Chemex Corporation do: it makes something the rest of the industry uses every day.
