Peter Schlumbohm
Peter Schlumbohm (10 July 1896 – 1962) was a German-born chemist and industrial designer who invented the Chemex coffeemaker in New York in the late 1930s.123 He is the reason a piece of laboratory glassware ended up on café counters, and he is the single most-cited individual in the equipment half of pour-over history.
He is the person, not the company. Chemex Corporation carries the corporate story — the factory, the filters, the family that owns it now. This note is about the man: what he trained in, why the coffeemaker exists at all, and which parts of the legend do not survive being checked.
The short version. He took a chemistry doctorate in Berlin, moved to New York, and spent his life inventing things — mostly refrigeration equipment, which never made money. To fund the refrigeration research he sold consumer objects, and one of them, a coffee brewer built out of a funnel and a flask, became the only commercially successful product line he ever had.2 It is still in production more than eighty years later.

The refrigeration man who sold coffeemakers
The order of events is the part people get backwards. Schlumbohm was not a coffee person who happened to know chemistry; he was a refrigeration engineer who needed cash.
Between 1929 and 1941 he filed 44 patents, and at least 26 of them were on refrigeration — his real subject.1 He showed a prototype of an “open system” transitory refrigeration device at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, and Lemelson-MIT records that he traced his interest in launching the Chemex to the problem of raising capital for that refrigeration venture.2 Consumer goods were the funding mechanism. The coffeemaker was supposed to pay for the freezer.
It went the other way round. Lemelson-MIT’s biography states flatly that the Chemex line was Schlumbohm’s “only line of commercially successful products.”2
Why the coffeemaker exists
The Chemex is a chemist’s answer to a chemist’s complaint. Hagley Museum and Library, which holds his scrapbooks, describes the coffeemaker as “designed in the 1930s” by a man driven by “a desire for a cleaner cup of coffee, and a knack for marketing and promotion.”3
Both halves of that sentence are load-bearing.
The cleaner cup is the engineering. American coffee of the period came out of a percolator — water boiled through the same grounds over and over — or a cloth bag, and Schlumbohm’s fix was to stop improvising and use the apparatus his training already gave him: a conical funnel, a flask, borosilicate glass, and a filter paper thicker than anything sold for kitchen use. His own description of the object, quoted in the design press, is almost aggressively unromantic: it “makes excellent coffee, and consists essentially of chemical laboratory equipment.”5 He did not invent filter brewing — paper-filter drip was already thirty years old, see Pour-over brewing — he rebuilt it to laboratory tolerances.
The marketing is the other half, and it is the reason the object survived. He sold it as “The Chemists’ Way of Making Coffee”,2 filed a working prototype into the 1939 New York World’s Fair,1 and boasted that “with a Chemex, even a moron could make a great cup of coffee.”4 Within three years of launch, Wanamaker’s and Macy’s were stocking it.2 During the war, with materials rationed, he got War Production Board approval to keep manufacturing and then signed a production deal with Corning Glass Works — the company that made Pyrex.2

”Beautilities”
Schlumbohm’s own name for what he made was “Beautilities”: objects meant to be beautiful and useful in the same breath.5 He applied it across a range that had nothing to do with coffee — electric fans, cocktail shakers, water kettles.
The museums agreed with him. The Chemex sits in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Lemelson-MIT also lists the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution.126 MoMA’s own catalogue entry for it reads “Peter Schlumbohm. Chemex Coffee Maker. 1941.”6
This is the unusual thing about his legacy in coffee: the brewer was canonised as design decades before specialty coffee existed to care about it. That is also why it survived. The Chemex spent the mid-century being bought as a beautiful object by people with no interest in extraction, and was therefore already in circulation when third wave cafés went looking for manual brewers in the 2000s.
What he is not
Worth stating plainly, because he is one of the most-cited names in specialty coffee: Schlumbohm never grew, milled, roasted or traded coffee. He was an inventor and manufacturer of equipment.
There is no cupping score, no lot, no farm, no altitude, no processing method and no auction price attached to his name, and none should ever be attributed to him. He does not appear as a producer, exporter or buyer in Best of Panama, Cup of Excellence or any green-coffee auction record, and no 100-point score exists for anything connected to him — the entire apparatus of scored, traceable green coffee arrived decades after he died. Coffees are brewed on a Chemex; none were ever grown by one.
His nearest analogue on this wiki is Alfred Peet in the same sense: a figure whose documented contribution is method and object, in an era before the trade recorded anything else.
To verify — 300 inventions, or 44 patents?
Lemelson-MIT says Schlumbohm “invented and patented some 300 items over the course of his career”;2 Collectors Weekly says he “patented more than 300 different devices.”5 The encyclopedic record is far smaller and far more specific: 44 patents filed between 1929 and 1941, at least 26 of them on refrigeration.1 The two figures cannot be reconciled from anything read here — they may count different things (ideas or product variants versus granted U.S. patents, or many countries versus one), but no source says so. Do not repeat “300 patents” as a verified number. The same conflict is flagged on Chemex Corporation.
To verify — how he died, and who got the company
A public-radio feature reports that Schlumbohm died of a heart attack in 1962 at age 66 and that “he left Chemex to his secretary”, from whom the Grassy family bought the business in the 1980s.4 The year 1962 is agreed by every source;125 the cause, the age and the bequest to the secretary rest on this single journalistic account, with no probate record, obituary or corporate filing consulted. (Age 66 is at least internally consistent with a 10 July 1896 birth, but only if he died after his birthday that year.) Collectors Weekly says only that after his death the company “had trouble maintaining its relevance” and “mostly faded into obscurity” — it names no owner.5
To verify — 20 Beautilities in MoMA, and the MoMA record itself
The claim that “at least 20 of these ‘Beautilities’ … eventually made it into the New York Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection” comes from one article.5 The fact that MoMA holds the Chemex is well attested;12 the count of twenty is not corroborated. MoMA’s own online collection record was not readable for this note — the page returned HTTP 403 — so the catalogue wording quoted above is taken from the research report rather than read at source.6
To verify — Gestalt psychology, and the third-wave revival
Two further claims come from a single trade-press feature and were not read at source for this note: that Schlumbohm also studied Gestalt psychology, and that the Chemex’s resurgence in the late 2000s was driven by third-wave roasters, with Intelligentsia Coffee named as a prominent promoter of the method.7 The revival itself is not in doubt — Chemex Corporation records a sales upturn around 2005 from first-hand reporting — but the Gestalt training and the specific attribution to Intelligentsia are uncorroborated.
To verify — the James Bond reference
The same radio feature reports that Ian Fleming had James Bond drink coffee “brewed in an American Chemex” in the 1957 novel From Russia With Love.4 The novel was not consulted and no second source was found, so treat this as a reported claim, not a checked quotation.
