El Velo

El Velo is a 50-hectare coffee farm in Palmira, Boquete, Chiriquí, Panama, and one of the three farms that together make up Hacienda La Esmeralda — the others being Jaramillo and Cañas Verdes (Hacienda La Esmeralda — El Velo, accessed 2026-07-23). The Peterson family bought it in 2012, making it the newest of the three. It matters for two reasons: it is where the family keeps its variety research collection, and it is the source of Esmeralda’s rare-variety lots, including the Laurina that won a category at Best of Panama in 2025.

The farm

Coffee is planted between 1,650 and 1,900 metres above sea level. Above the planted area, a nature reserve runs on up the mountain to 2,900 m — home to the Resplendent Quetzal and other endangered birds (Hacienda La Esmeralda, accessed 2026-07-23).

El Velo is the odd one out among Esmeralda’s farms in one practical way: it is the only one flat enough to plant in neat rows. The others follow steep, irregular volcanic slopes. Flat ground makes the farm easier to work and easier to compare plot against plot — which is exactly what a research farm needs.

The research collection

Alongside the commercial planting of Geisha and Catuai, El Velo holds smaller plots of rare varieties — Laurina, Pacamara and SL-34 — plus over 400 further accessions (individual variety samples) obtained from CATIE, the Costa Rican agricultural research centre that maintains one of the world’s main coffee gene banks. These plantings are part of Esmeralda’s own research programme (Hacienda La Esmeralda, accessed 2026-07-23).

In plain terms: El Velo is Esmeralda’s laboratory. Most farms plant what sells; this one also plants hundreds of things to find out what they taste like at this altitude, on this soil.

The 2025 result is the record carried on the Hacienda La Esmeralda note: in the year Esmeralda swept all three Best of Panama categories, the two Geisha winners came from the Nido plot, while the Varietal (non-Geisha) title came from El Velo’s Laurina — the research plantings paying off in the auction ring.

What roasters buy

El Velo lots reaching roasters are almost always Geisha naturals — cherries dried whole with the fruit still on, rather than washed. Recent examples:

  • Proud Mary (Australia) — “El Velo Geisha | Natural”, listed at 1,800 masl and described as coming from the Buena Vista section of El Velo (Proud Mary, accessed 2026-07-23).
  • Grand Cru Coffee (Hong Kong) — 2025-harvest microlots produced by Rachel Peterson under “Reserva de …” lot names, processed by cold fermentation and dried on raised beds, sold in 80 g boxes (HK$268 at time of access) (Grand Cru Coffee, accessed 2026-07-23).
  • Gardelli Specialty Coffees (Italy) — “El Velo Geisha Microlots”, natural, 1,750 m, tasting of hibiscus, orange, blackberry, jasmine and lemongrass (Tasting Grounds, accessed 2026-07-23).

Across these listings the individual lots are labelled between roughly 1,700 and 1,850 m — consistent with the farm’s overall planting range.

To verify

  • Which village is El Velo actually in? The farm’s own site says Palmira. Roasters disagree: Proud Mary says Alto Quiel, Grand Cru says Cañas Verdes, and Black & White says Jaramillo (Black & White, via research report, not independently fetched). Cañas Verdes and Jaramillo are the names of Esmeralda’s other two farms, so those two labels look like roaster mix-ups. Treat Palmira as the producer’s own answer until an official map says otherwise.
  • Date conflict with our own notes. Our Price Peterson and Hacienda La Esmeralda notes say the decade-long variety-research project began at El Velo in 2007 — but the farm’s own site says El Velo was purchased in 2012. Both cannot be right as written. Likely the research programme predates the farm and moved there later; confirm before citing either date.
  • The “Buena Vista” section of El Velo, and the claim that it neighbours Elida Estate and Mama Cata, come from a single roaster page (Proud Mary, accessed 2026-07-23).
  • The 2025 Best of Panama score, price and buyer above are inherited from the Hacienda La Esmeralda note and were not confirmed against official results here — bestofpanama.org currently fronts the 2026 edition and publishes no browsable 2025 result table.
  • No auction price or cupping score is published for El Velo’s Geisha lots in any source consulted. Any figure you see quoted for “El Velo Geisha at auction” should be checked against official Best of Panama or Esmeralda Private Collection records.
