Joe Prewett

Joe Prewett is the chief executive officer of Counter Culture Coffee, the Durham, North Carolina roaster, a job he took up on 1 August 2025.¹² He replaced co-founder Brett Smith, who had run the company for its first thirty years and moved to the role of executive chairman on the same date.¹

He is worth a note here for a structural reason rather than a personal one. Counter Culture is the rare American third-wave roaster that never sold — Intelligentsia Coffee and Stumptown Coffee Roasters both went to Peet’s in 2015, Blue Bottle Coffee to Nestlé in 2017 — so handing the chief executive’s job to someone other than a founder is the biggest change of hands in the company’s history, and Prewett is the person it went to.

Career

Prewett is not a barista or a green buyer who worked up through the trade. He is a branded-food and beverage operator who has moved between coffee and other packaged foods, and this is the second time he has come back to coffee.

Two things in that table are the ones actually worth holding onto.

He was already inside the company. The four years on Counter Culture’s board mean this was not a search that landed on a stranger. Boards of privately held roasters are small; a director who becomes chief executive has been watching the accounts and the sourcing arguments for years before taking the job.¹

He has coffee experience, but from the brand side. His five-plus years at Coffee Bean International — a Portland, Oregon roaster and private-label producer — were in marketing and product management, not buying or roasting.¹³ For a company whose public identity rests on Direct trade purchasing standards and an annual transparency report, that is a notable pairing: the paperwork-and-provenance company hired a brand-and-category person.

On arriving he said it was “an honor to join Counter Culture Coffee — a company I have long admired for its uncompromising approach to pioneering innovations in coffee quality, sustainability, and education.”¹ Smith, announcing the change, said that “after thirty years of living and breathing Counter Culture, the time felt right to welcome a new leader who can build on our foundation and help us navigate the opportunities ahead.”¹

To verify — the Farmer Brothers claim and the Oregon Fruit dates

The research report behind this note relays, from a World Coffee Portal social post, that Prewett is a former “Coffee Bean International / Specialty Coffee by Farmer Brothers” executive who held vice-president of marketing roles at Farmer Bros, had more than two decades of consumer-packaged-goods, foodservice and coffee leadership experience, and served as CEO of Oregon Fruit Company from 2022 to 2025.⁴ None of that is in Counter Culture’s own announcement, which names Coffee Bean International, Tillamook and Oregon Fruit but no Farmer Brothers role and no start or end years.¹ A targeted search for Prewett alongside Farmer Brothers, or for Oregon Fruit tenure dates, returned no results at all from this machine. Farmer Brothers did acquire Coffee Bean International, so a Farmer Bros title is plausible as the same employer under a later owner — but plausible is not confirmed. Treat the Farmer Brothers link, the “two decades” figure and the 2022–2025 dates as unverified.

To verify — the LinkedIn profile

The report cites a LinkedIn profile at linkedin.com/in/prewett showing “Counter Culture Coffee, August 2025 – Present” and “CEO at Counter Culture”.⁵ LinkedIn blocks automated fetching, so this page was never read here and the profile was not confirmed to belong to this Joe Prewett. It agrees with the company announcement on the one fact it overlaps on, which is reassuring but not independent verification.

What is not documented

The research behind this note also looked for a coffee producer, competitor or auction seller named Joe Prewett — farm ownership, cupping scores, Best of Panama or Cup of Excellence placements, altitudes, processing methods, auction prices. Nothing exists under that name in any citable source; every result points to the same executive.

That is worth recording rather than quietly dropping, because it is the answer to a real ambiguity. If a reader arrives here after seeing “Prewett” attached to a lot or a farm somewhere, this note is not about that person, and this wiki has no evidence such a person exists.

It also mirrors the gap already recorded on Counter Culture Coffee itself: the company’s public record is built on standards, transparency reports and training, not on auction ledgers — so its chief executive shows up in trade press and press releases, never in a results table.
