Jack Ma
Jack Ma (马云, Mǎ Yún) is the Chinese entrepreneur who founded Alibaba Group. He has never grown coffee, roasted it, graded it, bought a lot at auction, or entered a competition.
He is in this wiki because of what his company built underneath the Chinese coffee trade. Alibaba owns Tmall — the shop window where imported coffee is sold — plus Freshippo (the supermarket), Ele.me (the delivery riders) and Taobao and Alipay alongside them. When Starbucks China signed the biggest coffee deal in Chinese e-commerce in August 2018, it signed it with all five at once, and it signed it while Ma was Alibaba’s executive chairman.
A search of the specialty-coffee record — Best of Panama, Cup of Excellence, SCA and CQI listings, barista and brewing championships — turns up nothing under his name. No farm, no lot, no score, no bid, no Q-grader certificate. Everything on this page is either biography or something a company did while he ran it, and the difference matters.
It especially matters next to Liu Qiangdong, the founder of JD.com, the other name in this wiki for the same reason. Liu’s company walked into an auction and bought a coffee. Ma’s companies have never bought a bean; they carry other people’s. One is a buyer, the other is a channel — and only buyers change what gets planted and what a farmer gets paid.
Story
He was born on 10 September 1964 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province (Wikipedia, read directly, accessed 2026-07-23). He took a bachelor’s degree in English from Hangzhou Normal University in 1988, then taught English and international trade as a lecturer at Hangzhou Dianzi University (same source).
His first business was a translation agency, the Hangzhou Hope Translation Agency, founded in 1994. A website followed the next year, and out of it grew China Pages (中国黄页), an online yellow-pages directory; the domain was registered on 10 May 1995 (same source).
Then the one that mattered. On 28 June 1999, Ma and 17 friends and students founded Alibaba.com in an apartment in Hangzhou — a business-to-business marketplace for Chinese manufacturers selling to the world (Wikipedia — Alibaba Group, accessed 2026-07-23; the same founding is recorded on the Tmall note). Consumer shopping, cloud computing and digital payments came later; Tmall itself was spun out of Taobao in 2008 and made an independent business in 2011.
He handed the company over in two stages:
| Date | What changed |
|---|---|
| 10 May 2013 | Steps down as chief executive, stays executive chairman |
| 10 September 2018 | Announces he will leave the chairmanship within a year |
| 10 September 2019 | Steps down as chairman; Daniel Zhang succeeds him |
(Dates from Wikipedia — Jack Ma and Wikipedia — Alibaba Group, both accessed 2026-07-23.)
In October 2020 he gave a speech at a Shanghai financial forum criticising Chinese regulators and describing the state banks as running on a “pawn shop mentality.” On 3 November 2020 the Shanghai Stock Exchange halted the stock-market flotation of Ant Group, Alibaba’s payments affiliate, and Ma largely withdrew from public life (Wikipedia, accessed 2026-07-23). He moved to Tokyo in 2022, and from 1 May 2023 to 31 October 2024 held an invited professorship at Tokyo College, where his stated research subject was sustainable agriculture and food production (same source).
That professorship is the closest he has come to farming in any documented way, and it is not coffee. No crop, no country, no project is named in the record consulted here.
Where he actually touches coffee
Two places, neither of them a farm.
The channel. Tmall and Tmall Global are, with JD.com, the main routes by which imported and specialty coffee reaches Chinese drinkers at all — see China coffee market. Jacobs Douwe Egberts opened a Tmall Global flagship in 2019; countless roasters sell there. Ma built that window. It is the largest thing he has done to coffee and it is entirely indirect.
The 2018 Starbucks deal, signed on his watch. On 2 August 2018 Starbucks China and Alibaba announced a partnership covering Ele.me, Hema, Tmall, Taobao and Alipay — delivery riders, in-store fulfilment kitchens, and a merged “Starbucks Delivers” online store (Starbucks China, official announcement, accessed 2026-07-23). Ma was executive chairman that day; he announced his departure five weeks later. But the person Alibaba put in front of the deal was Daniel Zhang, then chief executive, who is the only Alibaba executive quoted in the announcement. Ma is not mentioned in it.
So: the deal happened during his chairmanship, and he did not front it. Both halves of that sentence are load-bearing, and coverage that credits “Jack Ma’s Starbucks deal” is compressing them.
To verify — biography details that did not survive a direct read
The research report attributes two claims to Wikipedia that were not found when the page was actually opened on 2026-07-23: that Ma failed the gaokao, China’s university entrance exam, twice before passing on the third attempt; and that China Pages was acquired by China Telecommunications Corporation in 1996. Both circulate very widely in business profiles. Neither is confirmed here, and neither should be stated as fact without a source that has been read.
To verify — his wealth
Figures conflict and none is a fixed fact. The research report gives about US27.5 billion with no date attached (Wikipedia, accessed 2026-07-23). Almost all of it is shares in listed companies, so the number moves with the market; treat any single figure as a reading taken on one day.
To verify — the claim that Jack Ma is a coffee figure at all
This note exists because the topic was proposed, and the honest finding is negative. No primary coffee source — Best of Panama, Alliance for Coffee Excellence / Cup of Excellence, SCA, CQI, or any producer or exporter site — lists a farm, lot, price, buyer record, score or competition result under the name Jack Ma or Ma Yun. Nor is there documentation tying the Jack Ma Foundation — which states its own work as entrepreneurship, education, medical and environmental protection, and women’s leadership (Jack Ma Foundation, accessed 2026-07-23) — to any named coffee-origin programme, farmer training scheme or cupping initiative. Anything of that shape found elsewhere should be treated as unverified until a primary source carries it.
